Continue ReadingSantiam Christian is currently ranked the number one 3A team in the state – and for good reason. The Eagles have size, speed, and balance and on Tuesday night, they put all three of those on display. It was a little ragged at first, but Santiam Christian got things going – and got things going in a big way – and the Eagles cruised to a 83-45 road win over Portland Adventist.
“We had a slow start but we made some adjustments and were able to capitalize on our length,” said Santiam Christian head coach Dennis McLain. “We had a lot of assists tonight as we moved it around and passed it to the open guy. It was a fast paced, transition game and this is a good win for us.”
Whether it was the long drive up to Portland or what – the team encountered two wrecks along the way – it took just a little bit for the Eagles to get going. Star senior Zach Baugher in particular went one for his first six shots. But when Santiam Christian started to capitalize on some turnovers in transition, the rout was on. The Eagles took a 24-12 first quarter lead and never looked back, clearing their bench in the fourth quarter.

The Prospects
Zach Baugher (2019 Santiam Christian) – Stats: 27 pts, 12 reb, 8 ast, 6 stl, 10-17 fg, 4-5 3pt, 3-3 ft. After his slow start, Baugher got things into gear and racked up totals up and down the stat sheet. As usual the lefty knocked down several outside shots but he also created off the dribble and finished near the basket with both hands, absorbing contact and converting three traditional three-point plays. Playing some point guard this year, Baugher capably brought the ball up and had about half of his assists on outlet passes off defensive rebounds. The Western Oregon signee is a very touch matchup defensively due to his combination of size and skills and he pretty much was able to do whatever he wanted to do and that’s with sitting out most of the fourth quarter.
Koby Williamson (2020 Santiam Christian) – Stats: 15 pts, 5 reb, 3 blk, 7-14 fg, 1-2 3pt, 0-0 ft. Williamson is a long big man at 6-foot-8 who at this stage of his development, prefers facing the basket where he can utilize his perimeter shooting. His very first basket was a three, which he took without any hesitation. The majority of his scoring came from pull-up jumpers and while he did score some around the basket, there were a few misses that would have been makes with more strength. Defensively he stood his ground and capably defended the rim, registering a few blocks.
Josh Baugher (2021 Santiam Christian) – Stats: 12 pts, 3 reb. 3 ast, 5-8 fg, 1-1 3pt, 1-1 ft. The younger brother of Zach shared point guard duties and did a good job of taking care of the basketball when it was his turn. Offensively, he attacked the basket and was able to get to the rim rather well, either finishing himself or kicking it out to the open man. Baugher didn’t take too many perimeter shots but his form looked fluid.
Joe MaQatish (2021 Santiam Christian) – Stats: 5 pts, 2 reb, 2 blk, 2-3 fg, 1-2 ft. MaQatish is a developing 6-foot-7 big man who came off the bench to contribute. While he didn’t get many touches down low, he used his girth to post up strong and he fought hard on the glass. A lefty, he showed decent touch on his two field goals and he was able to register a couple of blocks. For his size, MaQatish runs the floor fairly well.
Cole Cereghino (2019 Portland Adventist) – Stats: 11 pts, 2 reb, 5-9 fg, 1-4 ft. Whether it was in the high or low post, Cereghino was very active on the offensive end and looked to attack the basket whenever he got the chance. The 6-foot-4 senior has a decent mid-range game and wasn’t afraid to go up against Santiam Christian’s bigs.
Dylan Irvine (2019 Portland Adventist) – Stats: 9 pts, 5 reb, 1 ast, 3-7 fg, 1-3 3pt, 2-3 ft. Irvine, a 6-foot-1 combo guard, is one of the senior co-captains on the team. He didn’t force the action but took what the defense gave him and hit a couple of perimeter shots while capably taking care of the basketball. Irvine has a solid build and ended up leading the team in rebounding.
Sean Slabbert (2019 Portland Adventist) – Stats: 3 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast, 1-4 fg, 1-2 ft. Although he’s the tallest guy on the team at 6-foot-5 and he has a solid build, it’s pretty clear that Slabbert is more comfortable facing the basket. The senior looked for his spots on the floor in the elbow area, and while he only hit one shot, his jumper does have nice form and looks pretty smooth.
