Standouts: Preseason Classic at Edgewater
On Monday night, the FHSAA preseason officially started with Edgewater hosting a two-game shootout.
First up was Osceola beating Superior Collegiate 83-79 in the first matchup before West Oaks outlasted Edgewater 85-69.
Here are the top standouts by team.
Osceola
—2019 6’6″ forward Isaiah Palermo found himself in foul trouble, but he battled through and kept his team in front. Stronger in his upper body, Palermo is hard to slow down when he gets on the attack. He’s a scrappy ballhandler and defender as well.
—2019 5’7″ guard Josh Marte makes passes that many people can’t. The Bethune Cookman commit doesn’t shy away from anyone despite his small frame. Marte can hold is own as a driver to the hoop as well. Osceola is grooming 2021 guard Joshua Blazquez alongside Marte and that bodes well for the program.
West Oaks
—2019 6’1″ guard Tyrell Jones is committed to Auburn, but that isn’t stopping him from continuing to put in the work. He has some of the quickest feet you’ll see and his ability to create for others with his high IQ passing is a huge asset. Jones can shoot from deep at a high clip as well.
—2019 6’5″ Alic Troutman seemed to be everywhere in the victory over Edgewater. Whether he was grabbing a board down low or going inside and drawing contact, Troutman was active. Not the quickest, he is a powerful player who gets it done on both ends of the floor.
Superior Collegiate
—2020 6’3″ guard Khalil Shaheed carried the way for his side as the main ballhandler and slasher. A natural born athlete, he is always determined and looking to win offensive possessions. Look for Shaheed to score at will often this season for Superior Collegiate.
—2019 6’4″ guard Eric Lee arrived at Superior just last week from Spoto. He was nearly unstoppable in the opening half, hitting tough mid-range jumpers and diving for many loose balls. Lee is an underrated athlete who will be a big contributor to his new team’s approach.
Edgewater
—2020 6’5″ guard Michael Eads is 100 percent healthy and that is super important to Edgewater. He is being more aggressive than previously and taking full command with his passing and vocal leadership. Eads is dripping in breakout potential as a junior.
—2020 6’5″ forward Navuan Peterson is a true competitor. He likes to mix it up on the boards and as an attacker on the break. Peterson was active all night long for the Eagles and is going to be a core piece in his junior campaign.
