Bishop O’Dowd and Salesian Prep Scrimmage: Takeaways
The first game in Nor-Cal this season was held in Richmond Ca. Salesian Prep and Bishop O’Dowd, two top programs in Nor-Cal got together for a 9 a.m. Saturday morning scrimmage. This was a good opportunity to see early on what the programs are doing to prepare for the season.
Both teams defenses seems to be a little ahead of the offenses, neither team was burning the nets early.
Salesian did mange to out score Bishop O’Dowd 11/6. In the second qtr Bishop O’Dowd seemed to be evaluating other players that might be able to help the senior trio of Will Chavarin a 6’3 combo guard, Iniko McNeil a 6’0 guard and Brendan Patrick another 6’0 guard who has experience from last years team that graduated two DI players. Salesian 17/8. The third qtr both coaches agreed to work on their zone defense. This is where Salesians size and length was most notable playing a 3-2 match-up zone defense, their long armed wings contested shots beyond the 3 point arc making it difficult for Bishop O’Dowd to get good open looks. 19/8 Salesian. The fourth qtr was more Salesian style basketball, full court pressure defense, trapping and trying to force turnovers that lead to easy baskets and open shots. Salesian 17/5
My Take: Bishop O’Dowd is replacing two DI players from last years team.
It’s going to take some time for this team to find their identity, mean while seniors Will Chavarin, a 6’3 combo guard, who can score, Iniko McNeil 6’0 a good all around guard and Brendan Patrick a 6’0 guard that can defend, are going to carry this team until the three Sophomores Marsalis Roberson a 6’4 lefty with some athleticism, Jarin Edwards 6’3 big body player who can help in the post and Taj Phillips a steady 5’8 point guard can define their roles.
My Take: Salesian is led by seniors Jaden and Jovon McClanahan.
The 5’10 twins are always in the mix disrupting on defense, getting steals that lead to easy baskets, knocking down big shots or driving to the basket for nice finishes. Together this dynamic duo will cause havoc for opponents. Salesian has size Manny Adeoye a 6’9 rim protector and good defender. Demarshay Johnson a 6’7 athletic Sophomore is going to be pushing for more playing time and Te’jon Sawyer a 6’8 hard to guard junior post player (dnp football) gives this team good inside depth and presence. The depth of this Salesian can’t be overlooked. Tyler Brinkman a 6’4 junior continues to improve as a player. He can hit the mid-range and spot up behind the arc, he’s long and active. Shane Bell a 6’3 reliable junior who slashes and finishes well around the rim plus he makes his presence felt on defense. Landen Manuel 5’10 guard a good shooter and Miles Savage a 5’10 junior guard who fits in well with this group. I think Miles is going to surprise some teams with his play. One to watch. Last but not least. Austin Johnson a 6’2 freshman guard. It’s always good to see a freshman play without fear and hesitation.
