Hoops On The Beach: Day 3 Standouts
Over in Cancun, Mexico, the International Basketball Training Hoops On The Beach tournament was in full force.
At the Kuchil Baxal gym, games with international talent were played including three sets of Florida teams compiled by IBT head trainer Carlos Morales Jr.
Here is a look at the top performers from Day 3 of the event.
ICYMI:
Nestlee Quiñones (Central Pointe Christian/Team Florida 19U)
Nestlee Quiñones was making things happen on open looks from deep. He played through pain late in the game against Belize, serving as a pacesetter and playmaker. The 2019 guard’s mid-range game is his best asset and he could stand to attack more to bring energy to his side.
Omar Ataire (Upaep Universidad/Marlins)
Omar Ataire is a fierce attacker who isn’t afraid to use his whole body to drive and finish. He goes to the right well and is strong with the ball. Ataire was making things happen against Team Florida 19U in an afternoon tilt.
Jonathan Aybar (Central Pointe/Team Florida 17U)
Playing up to his competition on Saturday, 2020 Central Pointe Christian forward Jonathan Aybar was scoring off the dribble, slashing and making smart passes. He is long and needs to continue to attack instead of settling for jump shots. Although his mid-range jumper is nice.
Nicolas Phillips *Ahmadiyya Belize 19U
A true athletic big man, Nicholas Phillips was consistent all night long in the win over Team Florida. He wanted the victory bad and when the final whistle blew he celebrated loudly with his teammates. Phillips is a true attacker who needs to improve his jumper, but his inside feel is impressive.
Laziz Talipov (Winter Park/Team Florida 15U)
A skinny but fast point guard, 2021 Winter Park guard Laziz Talipov can really stroke it from outside. He has a shooter’s touch and is very active on the boards for a smaller guard. Talipov was steady for Team Florida 15U all day long.
Humberto Mena (Alphas 17U)
Humberto Mena is an energy filled big man who is sound on the glass and a rim protector. He wasn’t always finishing his layup attempts, but he was drawing contact and finding his way to the free throw line often.
