Mekhi Abner Mekhi Abner 6'6" | PF/SF Minnehaha Academy | 2029 State MN is a six-foot-four-inch 2029 Minnehaha Academy and PJ Hoops 2029 forward that in 3v3 action showed more willingness and accuracy shooting the ball from the perimeter. Abner has mostly been a traditional four-man forward, posted up, screening and rolling, and being inside 15 feet offensively so the shot making from beyond the arc is a promising sign of growth. Another play in the 3v3 action was an offensive rebound and around the rim score. Abner showed off his fancy footwork and finishing touch. Abner’s ability to defend at the rim and on the perimeter makes him a very versatile player and the added offensive punch will make him a much more dangerous player.

Mekhi impressed me with the improvements he has made to his overall game, looking very comfortable playing on the perimeter. He looked good on shot makes in the mid-range, being able to face up or play out of the post. He is a versatile defender, being able to defend in the post or man up on opposing guards on the perimeter. He is an excellent shot blocker and was making opposing players pay for trying him inside. Abner could also get the ball and create to get downhill.

At this classic Abner showcased a better ability of making jump shots and willingness to take more jumpers to go along with his smoothness below the rim most of the time finishing ability. Abner has a long reach making him a force on the offensive glass and very solid overall rebounder while also being a good post defender. His length offers positional versatility that enables him to slide out to the perimeter as well. 

Mekhi was doing everything he could to bring his PJ Hoops team back into the game after falling behind early against Minnesota Magic . He has an intriguing blend of size, skill, and finishing touch that allows him to take smaller wings into the post, or beat opposing forwards off the dribble. So tough to matchup with as he just has a nose for the basket, and rarely misses when he gets into the paint. Already played a key role last season as a freshman for the Class AA state champs.

Going up against a strong Southwest Christian frontcourt on Wednesday, Mekhi was a key reason why Minnehaha came away with the win. As just a freshman he doesn’t shy away from contact, and plays with impressive grit and physicality down low. If he caught anywhere near the basket, Mekhi was looking to power his way to the basket, even when defended by 6’6-6’7 upperclassmen. Abner is relentless on the glass on both ends, and is did a nice job of preventing low-post touches on the defensive end.
