Week 6 Rankings Update
The first week back from the holiday break brought some big games to the slate, and some major results have resulted in shakeups in the rankings. We take a look below.
Defending champion Grand View Christian (9-0) remains atop the Class 1A rankings, followed by North Linn (12-0) and Remsen, St. Mary’s (10-0). Bishop Garrigan, Algona (10-1) moves up a spot from No. 5 to No. 4 after a week in which they beat then-2A No. 6 Forest City. Lynnville-Sully (9-1) drops a spot and rounds out the top five. Ankeny Christian (8-1) is the lone newcomer at No. 10.
The top five teams remain the same in Class 2A, where top ranked Van Meter (10-0) received a boost this week, getting 6-8 senior Grant Johnson back on the court. Johnson averaged 8.5 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks last season and gives the Bulldogs another big body in the paint. All ten teams that were ranked last week remain in the rankings, but there is some shakeup in the lower half. Unbeatens East Marshall (9-0), Aplington-Parkersburg (10-0) and South Hamilton (11-0) round out the top eight, while Forest City (10-1) and Unity Christian (8-3) come in at Nos. 9 and 10.
Oskaloosa (10-0) is the new No. 1 in Class 3A. The Indians were ranked third last week, then absolutely blasted then-No. 4 Norwalk (8-1) 87-52 on Friday night. As a result of that dominant win, we’ve made the decision to move the Indians to the top spot, replacing Glenwood (9-0), who falls to No. 2. Despite a blowout loss to Omaha Central (NE), Sioux City Bishop Heelan (7-1) only falls a spot to No. 3. Mount Pleasant (8-2) and Cedar Rapids Xavier (5-3) round out the top five. Charles City (8-1) and Winterset (7-1) are this week’s newcomers, checking in at No. 7 and No. 10, respectively.
After a combined 13-1 week in Class 4A, all ten teams remain ranked, albeit in a slightly different order. The top four of Iowa City West (8-0), Des Moines North (8-1), Johnston (8-1) and Waukee (8-1) remain the same. The lone loss of the ranked teams last week came when then-No. 5 Dubuque Senior (7-2) fell to crosstown rival and then-No. 10 Dubuque Hempstead (7-1). It was only a matter of time before the Noah Carter injury finally hurt the Rams, and it happened against the Mustangs. As a result, Senior falls to No. 10 and Hempstead moved up to No. 8.
