State Tournament: Tuesday's Top Performers

2024 PG [player_tooltip player_id='1288893' first='Tanner' last='Michael'] (Hudson)   Michael's assertiveness on the offensive end changed the course of the game for Hudson in their quarterfinal win over Grundy Center, as he scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half. A 6-0 lead guard who plays well in ball screen actions, Michael was able to get to the rim routinely for finishes or to get to the free throw throughout the second half, helping spark the Pirates offense that had been flummoxed by the length of Grundy Center. He's a tough guard who finishes around the rim with either hand, can knock down shots off the dribble or the catch, and he has good instincts on the defensive end. He finished with 21 points on 6-11 shooting (2-5 3P, 7-7 FT), 3 rebounds, and 2 steals.   2024 PF [player_tooltip player_id='1476978' first='Camden' last='Davis'] (Hudson)   The Pirates' star forward had a rough day finishing around the bucket against the Grundy Center size, going just 2-10 from the floor, but he stepped up and knocked down his free throws, including four big ones late to give Hudson the edge with 22 seconds to play. He's really good on the glass on both ends of the floor, making good, hard contact on his box outs and using his athleticism to elevate above the rest of the players on the floor. He's a solid team defender who rotates well and can protect the rim. He finished with 16 points, going 12-16 from the free throw line, to go with 12 rebounds and 3 blocks, helping send Hudson into the semifinals.   2025 SF [player_tooltip player_id='1478357' first='Jalen' last='Kirkpatrick'] (Grundy Center)   The 6-6 wing was the best player on the floor for long stretches in the Spartans' narrow quarterfinal loss. He has great size and length on the wing, a quick release off the catch, and plenty of range. With his size, he can get his shot off uncontested, and he has the size and athleticism to compete on the glass on both ends of the floor. He finished with 18 points on 7-13 shooting (3-7 3P, 1-1 FT) to go with 9 rebounds and 2 steals.   2026 PG [player_tooltip player_id='2413578' first='Dylan' last='Bosma'] (Unity Christian)   A tough 6-1 lead guard, Bosma was relentless on both ends of the floor in Unity Christian's win over Underwood, finishing with 25 points on 9-17 shooting (5-10 3P, 2-2 FT) to go with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal. An athletic guard who shoots it well off the dribble and the catch, he showed the ability to create for his teammates and himself at a high level. With his athleticism, toughness, and length, he can provide some versatility on the defensive end as well.   2026 SG [player_tooltip player_id='2413600' first='Austin' last='Wieringa'] (Unity Christian)   Another skilled sophomore guard for the Knights, Wieringa was phenomenal on the glass throughout their win over Underwood, finishing with 14 rebounds (5 on the offensive end) to go with 21 points on 7-14 shooting. He's a guard who is best when he's attacking the rim, using his quickness, ball-handling, and toughness to get to the bucket for finishes or to get to the free throw line.   2024 PF [player_tooltip player_id='2377360' first='Owen' last='Larsen'] (Underwood)   An athletic 6-5 forward, Larsen had a strong game for the Eagles against Unity Christian, scoring 13 points on 5-6 shooting (1-1 3P, 2-2 FT) to go with 10 rebounds and 4 blocks. He rotates well on the defensive end and is a good help defender with the size, length, and timing as a shot blocker, and he showed some versatility on the offensive end, scoring on post touches or stretching the floor.   2024 PF [player_tooltip player_id='1751187' first='Jack' last='Vanfossan'] (Underwood)   A 6-4 forward with a good feel for the game, Vanfossan was also really good in the painted area for the Eagles against Unity Christian, scoring 13 points on 6-13 shooting to go with 13 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals. He has good instincts on the defensive end and uses his length and IQ to get into passing lanes. He came away with a few timely steals to help keep the Eagles within striking distance.   2024 SF [player_tooltip player_id='1256304' first='Ben' last='Bockman'] (Decorah)   Bockman was in complete control from start-to-finish in Decorah's blowout win over Williamsburg, finishing with 29 points on 11-17 shooting (5-9 3P, 2-2 FT), 7 rebounds, and 2 steals. He set the tone early, scoring 15 first half points while his teammates got their feet wet, and he was flying all over the floor on the defensive end, getting a number of deflections and coming away with a pair of steals. The 6-5 wing has one of the purest strokes in the state, getting great elevation and rotation on his jumper, and he has a quick release off the catch.   2026 C Cael LaFrentz (Decorah)   The 6-10 sophomore big man is still pretty raw, but he had a big game for the Vikings against Williamsburg, finishing with 12 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 blocks. He showcases a good face-up game with a smooth lefty stroke out to about 15 feet, and he does a good job of using his size to contest shots without fouling on the defensive end. As he continues to add more strength to his frame and iron out his footwork, he could become an absolute bear to defend.   2026 PG [player_tooltip player_id='1765518' first='Jude' last='Gibson'] (Ballard)   The cat-quick guard from Ballard didn't have much luck finishing around the rim against the Assumption athleticism, going just 3-12 from the floor, but he played a great floor game, dishing out 12 assists against zero turnovers. He has great vision and is really good at getting the defense to collapse and then finding open shooters or cutting teammates. A strong state tournament debut from the sophomore.   2025 SG [player_tooltip player_id='2397342' first='Jackson' last='Brown'] (Ballard)   One of the primary beneficiaries of Gibson's 12 assists was Brown, a sharpshooting 6-1 guard who knocked down 5 3-pointers en route to a team-high 21 points in the Bombers' loss to Assumption. Brown has a quick release off the catch and he moves really well without the ball in his hands, finding open spaces in the defense to get his shot off. He contributes on the glass and is an active defender who uses his length effectively on that end of the floor.   2025 SG [player_tooltip player_id='1759945' first='Miles' last='Mudd'] (Ballard)   A 6-3 wing with a big, physical frame, Mudd had 17 points on extremely efficient shooting, going 7-8 from the floor, including 2-3 from behind the arc. He finishes well around the rim and does a good job moving without the ball, cutting to the rim. He shoots it well off the catch and has the size to get his shot off uncontested.   2024 SF [player_tooltip player_id='1256298' first='Nolan' last='Cogdill'] (Ballard)   The 6-6 Cogdill played one of his best games as a Bomber in his final high school game, scoring 15 points on 6-8 shooting, including going a perfect 3-3 from behind the arc. He has steadily improved over the last two years, turning himself into a reliable 3-point shooter and with his size, he could be a good stretch-4 at the Division 3 level, if he chooses to go that route.   2025 PG [player_tooltip player_id='1759900' first='Damyen' last='Jackson'] (Assumption)   Jackson is a quick 6-0 guard who leads the Knights in scoring on the season, and he showed why he can be such a deadly scorer throughout their win over Ballard, going for 21 points on an efficient 7-10 shooting, including going 2-4 from behind the arc. He's at his best when he's attacking downhill and getting to the rim, but he showed some confidence in his jumper as well. What was perhaps most impressive, however, was his playmaking off the dribble, as he routinely got into the teeth of the Bombers defense, got them to collapse in on him, and then found an open teammate, finishing with 8 assists.   2025 SF [player_tooltip player_id='1759902' first='Kayvion' last='Hodges'] (Assumption)   The 6-3 wing was high-energy throughout Assumption's quarterfinal win, finishing with 19 points on 8-12 shooting to go with 12 rebounds and 3 assists. He's a quick-twitch, explosive athlete who glides to the rim and soars above defenders to pull down rebounds, and he can defend multiple positions.   2026 SG [player_tooltip player_id='1660062' first='Navon' last='Shabazz'] (Assumption)   Watching Shabazz play, it's hard to see why he currently holds offers from Iowa, Iowa State, and Wake Forest, among other mid-major offers. He's a Power 5 athlete with the skill set to match, and he's only getting better. He makes tough, contested shots look easy, and when he has his feet set and is ready to shoot it off the catch, he's a really good shooter. He's still at his best when he's using his athleticism, quickness, and physical frame to play downhill and attack, but his jumper is progressing nicely. He had 21 points on 7-15 shooting (4-12 3P) and 6 rebounds in Assumption's win.   2024 SF [player_tooltip player_id='1376686' first='Jesse' last='Van Kalsbeek'] (MOC-Floyd Valley)   Van Kalsbeek was unstoppable from the start in the Dutchmen's win over Bondurant-Farrar, delivering the performance of the tournament so far, putting up 37 points on 12-20 shooting (3-5 3P, 10-15 FT) with 14 rebounds, 5 steals, and a block. The future Northwestern College wing showcased his ability to create off the dribble and score from all three levels with efficiency. He has a great frame at 6-6, handles it well, absorbs contact and finishes through it, and has a smooth stroke out to the arc. He has a non-stop motor on both ends of the floor, providing versatility on the defensive end to go with his immense offensive productivity. In a Mr. Basketball race that was pretty open coming into the week, Van Kalsbeek may have entered the conversation with this quarterfinal showing.   2025 SF [player_tooltip player_id='2397327' first='Hudson' last='McConnell'] (Bondurant-Farrar)   McConnell is an efficient 6-2 wing who does a majority of his damage by getting to the paint, either off of his own dribble penetration, good off-ball movement, or attacking the offensive glass. He had 18 points on 8-15 shooting and 7 rebounds in the Bluejays loss to MOC-Floyd Valley.   2025 PG [player_tooltip player_id='2397237' first='Cole' last='Miller'] (Bondurant-Farrar)   Miller is one of the toughest guards in the state, and he isn't going to back down from anyone. He routinely made jumpers from difficult angles, intentionally using the glass to his advantage on a few banked-in mid-range jumpers. He does well creating off the dribble for himself and his teammates and his ability to shoot it off the dribble, elevating into his jumper after stopping on a dime, is rivaled by few in the class. He had 17 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals in the Jays' season ending loss, but he'll pair with McConnell to give them a good one-two punch next season.   2024 SF [player_tooltip player_id='1376675' first='Cole' last='Marsh'] (Waverly-Shell Rock)   The future Iowa tight end was really good on both ends of the floor in the Go-Hawks' overtime win over Pella, finishing with team-highs in scoring and rebounding, putting up 17 points on 7-11 shooting (3-5 3P) and 14 rebounds, along with 2 assists and 2 blocks. He made a few huge defensive plays late in regulation and in the overtime session, and his ability to stretch the floor with his 6-6 frame is huge for W-SR.   2026 SG [player_tooltip player_id='2120763' first='Jack' last='McGuire'] (Pella)   McGuire is a 6-4 wing with a very bright future. He's a high IQ player who can do a little bit of everything for the Dutch, finishing with 17 points on 6-14 shooting, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. He's long and athletic, and he has really good footwork, which he uses to create tiny bits of additional space to get his shot off. He's a talented playmaker who sees the floor well and he has a good feel for the game. He looks like a player who is primed to have a really good summer.
