However, we saw impressive performances from players all across the board this week, both in conference and non-conference action. Read below for the top performers of the week from the private school ranks.
Randolph has been recovering from major knee surgery over the past year, and now that the calendar has flipped to 2024 he’s been making more of an impact. His best performance of the season came against national powerhouse Link Academy as he dropped 5 threes, as well as having 9 points against QEA in a four minute span to help them seal a big win. He’s a versatile 6’7 wing who’s development is a bit lagging from the injury, but is a coachable, winning player that works hard and shoots the ball extremely well for his size. He is in line for a successful post-grad year or an opportunity somewhere at the next level.
Rivens played a big part in the Lions going 3-0 this week against tough foes, beating Charlotte Country Day, Providence Day, and Christ School. He had 14 in the tight win over PDS, and 22 to lead all scorers against Christ School. He’s a shifty combo guard that has really developed his mid-range touch and playmaking in that area. He’s shown he can step out and hit the perimeter jumper, but still needs to work on his efficiency. He takes a lot of difficult shots, and makes most of them.
Smith got better as the week went along, highlighted with a 24 point game against Trinity Academy and then a 32 point game that was essential in them beating Thales Academy Rolesville. He’s a volume scorer that makes difficult shots on the move consistently, and is a high usage point guard. He can create for his teammates in spurts, but the primary role for him is to be a scorer. He’s got great positional size, and he should be worthy as an unsigned senior to get college coaches attention.

Wolf is an emerging freshman to know in Wilmington. He posted what seemed like his best two games so far this year last week, including 14 points and 7 rebounds in a hard fought win over John Paul II. He’s a mature body who fights hard in the paint and on the glass, winning a lot of battles with pure size already. When the technique and experience continues to come along, he will be fearsome to deal with. Also a solid finisher who can go through contact.

Simpson came up big for Gaston Day as they got big wins over Northside Christian and Hickory Grove Christian this week. He went for 17 and 21 in those two games, and knocked down 3 threes in both. He’s a well rounded scorer that does a lot of different things well on the floor, in a very Swiss Army knife way. His jump from JV to varsity has been impressive as a sophomore, as he and his teammates and giving Gaston Day a bright future. Be on the lookout for him to continue to have big games this season.
