A “glue guy” is a player with a constant positive attitude who doesn’t care about how many points or minutes they have, but gives it all on the court and will do whatever it takes for his team and teammates to succeed. A vocal leader who can do a little bit of everything, but can also be a coach on the floor who keeps their team in check and eye on the prize. Let’s take a look at some of the “glue guys” here in SWFL.
Sean Gomez
Sean Gomez
Gomez is a big-bodied guard who is an excellent 2-way player. He rebounds the ball well on both ends of the floor, and his size allows him to guard multiple positions. Offensively, he is a tremendous passer who looks for his teammates first, but is also an efficient scorer. The 6’3″ PG likes to drive and create, or he can absorb the contact and finish at the rim with both hands. He has an above-average mid-range game and if you leave him open he’s capable of knocking down the three. Gomez is averaging 12.4 ppg, 3.6 rpg, and 3.8 apg, but more importantly he is the Bear’s vocal leader both on and off the court, and has helped lead them to a 15-2 record.
The junior CG has done a little bit of everything for his Gateway Charter squad this season. He has helped lead the Griffins to a 15-5 record so far this year, and has done it not only with his play but also with his actions and leadership as a player. Game in and game out you can see him getting hyped for his teammates, but also reeling them in when needed. He acts as another coach on the floor, where he is always communicating with his teammates and keeping their heads in the game. Fogle is a tough defender who won’t back down from any matchup and is a great rebounder for his size. Offensively he can score from all 3-levels, and if he gets hot look out because he can score in bunches. Fogle is prospect to keep an eye on as he and his teammates look to make a run in the postseason.
Highlights
Cook has had a tremendous season thus far, averaging 26.1 ppg, 9.2 rpg, and 3.1 assists per game, leading his Eagles to a 12-2 record. He doesn’t just fill the stat sheet though, he is always communicating out there and doesn’t let his teammates get down on themselves. When he’s not on the floor he still impacts the game, where he is a vocal leader assisting his teammates, and is always trying to help the team in whatever way he can. Cook is a score first guard who is aggressive and likes to get to the hole, and as his stats show, he really does do it all for Gateway. The senior guard’s play and leadership will be a major factor in his team’s postseason success this year.
This long, athletic sophomore is a vocal leader for his Pirates, but he also leads by example with his play on the court. Lambert is a very talented prospect who just loves the game, where night in and night out he brings a little swagger to his game and you can just tell he’s having fun out there. He is a 3-level scorer who plays the game fast and is tremendous in transition where he likes to play above the rim. He has great handles for his size and has above-average vision, where he looks to get his teammates involved. In a recent outing, Port Charlotte got off to a slow start and it was Lambert who took on the role of leader, trying to calm down his teammates and not let them get frustrated during the adversity. Look for this sophomore to help lead his team in the ladder half of this season and the remainder of his career.
Jimenez is a big, strong kid who fits nicely with Mariner’s strong guard play. He is a force on the boards both offensively and defensively, and can handle the ball well for a guy his size. He plays the game hard and doesn’t let anything affect him. No matter what the score is, Jimenez, is always giving it 110% and doing whatever the team needs him to. The Tritons have had one the toughest schedules in the area, and no matter what happens they just keep balling and pushing each other to become better. The 6’3″ senior has faced some tough matchups, but has produced night in and night out, helping lead his team to an 11-8 record, and one of the top teams in the area.
