Expert Analysis
Garry Siehndel | Prep Hoops Scout
Matulis averaged 15.8 points per game this season for Booker T. Washington. The 6’5″ wing is a nightmare in catch-and-shoot situations from deep. However, this season he also began to attack as a driver and offensive rebounder for his squad. Mason continues to improve as an athlete and has a knack for remaining under control as a driver in the paint. He plays well off of two feet and continued to put the ball on the floor more and more as the season went on. Matulis was at the top of the scouting report this season and was able to show continued improvement despite the tough defense each night.

Incredibly efficient performance for 28 points on 12 shots. Including 5-7 shooting from three. Hit a miraculous four point play late in the game that brought Booker T Washington back from the dead. Over the last few years, he has been one of the most efficient shooters and scorers in Oklahoma. And he left it all on the court at Lloyd Noble.

Since Matulis broke onto the scene as a sophomore, he’s always played with fearlessness with the way he flew around. Which has led to plenty of highlight reel plays and amazing hustle defensive plays over the years. Somehow in the game against Millwood, he found another gear while playing with his hair on fire. Had one of the highlights of the year with a putback dunk. Then capped a third quarter rally with a cold as ice three. Even on a court with D1 caliber athletes, Matulis still stood out. Which given his height, shooting ability and athleticism, he has D1 traits as well.

Here’s a highlight tape example from my recent work, that follows the concepts outlined above.
Opens with a dunk. Then gets into three point shooting, which are two of Matulis’ best traits. Those are attention grabber type clips. Which lead into the little things he does well. Taking charges, helping out as an offensive rebounder. The goal of this tape was to drive home that while a shooter, Matulis has the size and athleticism to positively impact games even when he’s not hitting from deep.

One part of the defending Class 5A champs’ sharpshooting duo. Matulis exploded on the scene as a sophomore with a feathery touch from three. A killer from the corners, with one of the quicker and cleaner releases in the state. Along with his sharpshooting ability, has major “3 and D” potential in college. Because he is a big time athlete, quick and nimble on his feet. While also capable of highlight reel slams off backdoor cuts and in transition.

Matulis is one of the top athletes in the Class of 2026. He explodes off the floor to play above the rim on both ends of the floor. While also being an agile and active defender. He also has a pure shooting form and is one of the better shooters in Oklahoma. Toss in positional size to cover multiple spots along the perimeter and what’s the hold up on his offers?
Especially when he plays for one of the most prestigious high schools in Oklahoma. At Booker T Washington he’s thrived in his “3 and D” role and it continued with Southern Ties in Pro16 play. Seems like a simple transition to playing a similar role at the next level.

Matulis can be one of the most exciting watches in the state. Next level athlete, with a quick release from three. Who also appeals to the hoop heads as he’s often in the right place, at the right time on the defensive end for steals, contesting shots at the rim, and taking charges. Recently capped off his high school season with a 5A State Championship for Booker T Washington. Now has a big opportunity with Puma sponsored Southern Ties . A viewing earlier this month at Made Hoops saw Matulis’ impact come in spurts. He was quieter in two contests, then the next game caught fire from three and buried a team. While the 918 standout often checks a lot of little boxes, it’s finding more consistency with strong performances that will help him appeal to collegiate coaches.

Do it all off guard, who even though he didn’t shoot it well from the perimeter, still found ways to make an impact. Made two of the biggest plays of the fourth quarter, drawing charges on back to back possessions. Finished with 11 points, and is clearly willing to sacrifice for the team.

One of the top athletes in the class, Matulis elevates and flies around the court with an uncommon grace. After a breakout sophomore season, with an especially loud playoff run, his junior campaign has been a bit more up and down. There’s still great flashes with perimeter shooting and explosiveness in transition. Looks to have found his form a bit more from three in this second semester. Plays on a balanced team that has five different players averaging in double figures. Hopefully is in position to finish with another loud playoff run.
