Prospect Spotlight: Marquez Bell (2020)
Bell is a rising sophomore who wants to head his team like a senior. He has the game to back it up.
He’s a wispy, 6’0” guard who can race the floor like few you may have seen. In every game I’ve seen him play in, Bell’s always been the fastest guy on the court with the ball in-hand.
An under-spoken area of his game is without question his rebounding ability—especially on the offensive end. He’s always in relentless pursuit of the basketball after it hits the rim, whether it be his shot or a teammate’s. In a time where “following your shot” is a lost art, seeing how he approaches rebounding as a guard is refreshing.
He and his fellow sophomore Columbia Tiger, Jordan Smith, are sure to combine for greatness over the next three seasons in Lake City. In fact, their relationship goes way beyond the lines on the hardwood.
“We play on the same football team, same AAU team, so we’re more like brothers,” Bell said. “We do everything together.”
Bell believes if he works on his dribbling skills, as well as his shot mechanics, he could be sitting at the kitchen table with offer letters three years from now. But for now, he has some growing to do—and he’s embracing every part of it.
“I want to be a leader,” Bell said. “I want to push my teammates to be great. So, I’ll do what I have to do.”
