High School Look Back: Treyce Spurlock (Harlan County)
Treyce Spurlock had quite the career as a member of the Harlan County High School boys’ basketball program. The four-year flashy guard worked hard and gave his all each and every season, transforming him into not only a great basketball player, but also a great person – which is the best part.
“It was great,” Spurlock said of his high school career. “I loved all four years. My coach pushed me on the court and it helped me become a better player. I was also pushed academically, which helped me to a 3.93 GPA and a 23 on the ACT. I had a lot of individual success, but the team success – winning the (13th) Region – meant the most to me.”
In his final season of prep hoops, Spurlock averaged 15.1 points per game while shooting 44.1 percent from the field to go along with 5.4 rebounds per outing. His scoring and leadership ability helped lead the Black Bears to a District 52 Tournament championship, Region 13 Tournament championship and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen at Rupp Arena.
“The season was great; we finished 31-4 overall – the best record in school history,” Spurlock stated. “We also won the Region for the first time. My stats were good; I averaged 16 points per game and seven rebounds per game.”
With his high school playing days behind him, the athlete says he is looking to continue playing the game he loves at the next level.
“I’m gonna try my best to make it to the next level somewhere,” noted Spurlock. “I’m not signed anywhere yet.”
As he left a mark on the Harlan County boys’ basketball program, the player has a message for those still playing at the prep level:
“My message is pretty simple; just work the hardest you possibly can and help others around you to do the same,” Spurlock added. “The rest will fall into place.”
