Sweet 16 | 5 Best: Pikeville (46) vs. Perry County Central (61) – 3/15/17
LEXINGTON, Ky. – In the first round of the 100th annual Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet Sixteen Tournament at Rupp Arena, Perry County Central defeated Pikeville, 61-46, to advance to the quarterfinal round.
Here’s a look at the five key categories from today’s contest:
- Most Valuable Player: Damon Tobler, Perry County Central – Perry County Central’s senior guard Damon Tobler had himself a game, as he scored 12 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out eight assists to lead the Commodores to another postseason victory. Tobler threw down a massive slam dunk over a Pikeville defender on a fastbreak, but it was called a charge. Tobler has had a spectacular final season of high school basketball.
- Best Offensive Performance: Austin Hill, Perry County Central – Hill scored 12 points and was 6-of-7 from the field. He also grabbed four rebounds and gave his all for 30 whole minutes. Hill’s scoring came in a variety of ways, including layups and mid-range jumpers.
- Best Defensive Performance: Princewell Anosike, Perry County Central – The Nigeria native blocked 6 (!) shots and grabbed 15 total rebounds while also scoring 10 points in Wednesday’s first round games. Anosike altered many Pikeville shots and helped lead his Commodores’ club to a season-extending victory.
- Best Guy Off The Bench: Connor Risner, Pikeville – Pikeville’s Connor Risner came off the bench to score 5 points and contribute on the scoring side of things. Even though he didn’t put up huge numbers, Risner still gave it his all in his final game of the season.
- Best Coaching Decision/Strategy: Hoskins’ playcalling, Perry County Central – Perry County Central head coach Shannon Hoskins made the proper play calls all throughout the contest and used his jam-packed basketball mind to guide his Commodores to another postseason win.
