Cameron Oliphant (5’11 2022 PG, Duluth East)- Cam looks like he’ll play a key role for Duluth East off the bench, as he brings a variety of skills to the table at the lead guard spot. He’s a solid athlete with good quickness to defend either guard spot, and he runs the point with poise and maturity. Oliphant has some wiggle to him with the ball, able to maneuver his way to the rim off the dribble and finish with craft. I liked how he played unselfishly and made sure that everyone on his team got their share of the ball, but also wasn’t afraid to look for his own shot getting to the basket.
Cohen Kellogg Cohen Kellogg 6'0" | PG Orono | 2022 State MN (5’11 2022 PG, Minnetonka)- I didn’t have a chance to see Cohen play during the summer, but was blown away by the improvements he’s made during the offseason in the game I caught on Saturday. He’s always been a point guard capable of setting his teammates up, but looked to have improved confidence looking for his own shot. He hit a handful of threes in the game I saw, including bringing the ball up straight into a pull-up right in his defender’s face. Cohen also played with great change of pace to beat his man to the hoop for multiple finishes, and had one of the best passes I saw all day with his no-look dime leading to a dunk.
Isaiah Hagen (6’1 2023 PG, Orono)- The point guard position in Minnesota is in good hands, as it seems that every weekend a new 2023 prospect is emerging. In game one on Saturday, it was Isaiah Hagen catching my eye with his crafty handle and versatile scoring ability. He did well to create going to the basket and finishing, while also cutting hard off the ball for some open looks at the rim. Isaiah added in the ability to knock down the three ball and the mid-range off the dribble, as he put in a huge scoring effort in the second half. He wasn’t the quickest player on the floor, but he played with great pace and never appeared rushed even when the defense would throw double teams at him.
Cole Tiran Cole Tiran 5'10" | PG Eden Prairie | 2021 State MN (5’11 2021 PG, Eden Prairie)- After seeing Cole play on Saturday, he looks ready to play a big role for Eden Prairie this season. Cole is a quick point guard with a tight handle, able to score from inside or out while always keeping his head on a swivel to find the open man. If you give him too much space he can make you pay from beyond the arc, but he also showed off his crafty finishing ability around the rim to put some points on the board. If he continues this play into the high school season, I think a lot of D3 schools will be enquiring about him.
Dylan Omweno (6’ 2023 PG, Apple Valley)- Another one of many 2023 point guards that has been impressing lately, Dylan Omweno was hitting tough shot after tough shot during the opening game at the Top 250 Expo. He has such a smooth handle and is able to sprint to any spot on the floor while staying under control. His body control to stay balanced while stopping on a dime is extremely impressive, and he got good elevation on his jumper to shoot over the contest. Outside of being a big time scoring threat, Omweno just might be the fastest player in the 2023 class, as he is constantly flying by defenders on his way up the floor in transition.
Elijah Williams Elijah Williams 6'1" | PG Columbia Heights | 2021 State MN (5’11 2021 PG, Columbia Heights)- Columbia Heights loses the reigning conference player of the year to graduation, but don’t be surprised if they stay competitive, as Elijah Williams Elijah Williams 6'1" | PG Columbia Heights | 2021 State MN looks like a player ready to take on a bigger role. He impressed me with his quick but fluid handle, and aggressiveness to take the ball to the rack despite being one of the smaller players on the floor. Elijah has a quick first step, and once he gets to the rim he’s able to keep his body under control to finish through contact or over size. One of the more under-the-radar point guards in the 2021 class.
Maxsamus Wilson Maxsamus Wilson 6'3" | CG Hopkins | 2023 State MN (6’3 2023 PG, South St. Paul)- If there are two things that you can expect from Max when he’s on the floor, they’re confidence and energy. Maxsamus Wilson Maxsamus Wilson 6'3" | CG Hopkins | 2023 State MN had no problem pulling up from three, and although he may have attempted one or two from a bit too far out, he was hitting at a high rate when given too much space. He also operated well as a P&R ball handler, with the patience to find his big man rolling to the hoop for an easy bucket. Max powered through contact around the rim for a few additional baskets as well.
