While I personally wasn’t on site at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Long Beach, the live stream set up to cast on my 50-inch Samsung TV in my office more than sufficed for evaluation purposes.
One of the games I was intrigued to watch at this event was Dream Vision Next (16’s) vs. Belmont Shore as those programs each had local and regional talent on display. Below are the standouts from that game in which DV Next took a 68-65 victory.
Jeremiah Nyarko, DV Next – Nyarko’s skill-set continues to evolve to match his athletic upside. The 6-foot-8 forward is a high motor guy who uses his size, strength and vertical athleticism to finish in the paint, but showed that he’s extending his shooting range. The St. John Bosco rising junior connected on three catch-and-shoot triples en route to 19 points. Nyarko also had a handful of impressive dunks.
Corey Yerger, DV Next – Yerger was listed as transferring to Balboa Prep after averaging 20 points per game his junior year at Sacramento Grant. The 6-foot-1 point guard operated the pick-and-roll at a high level, using it to generate paint touches and buckets as well as trips to the free throw line. Yerger led all scorers with 28 points, 11 of those coming from the charity stripe.
Ring Malith, DV Next – Malith is a long, wiry and active forward whose energy on both ends of the floor results in positive things happening. The 6-foot-7 rising senior Has a long and quick first step in the half-court which allows him to get to the rim and finish with limited dribbles. He’s a good defensive rebounder who outlets quickly to a guard and rim runs with purpose.
Jorge Ochoa, Belmont Shore – Ochoa is wired to score and exactly why that is with his team-high 19 points. The 6-foot-7, class of 2022 forward can score inside and out, using his strength to power through contact and finish in the paint, while also stopping and popping mid-range jumpers off the bounce.
Kevin Bradley, Jr. – Belmont Shore – Bradley is flying a bit under-the-radar in the SoCal area. The 5-foot-11 rising senior has a good all-around feel for the game and showed the ability to manage scoring and distributing well. Bradley, a Crenshaw High product, doesn’t get sped up when pressured, has a good first step and doesn’t force offensive actions. He finished with 12 points on the game.
