But the hard-working 6-foot-5, 190-pound rising junior made a mark his first year on varsity in 2019-20 for North Medford and he’s ready to do even bigger things this upcoming season. Dyer has been working hard on his game and hoping it catches the eyes of college coaches in the process.
This past season, largely because he was 1) one of the tallest players on the team and 2) because he plays so hard and has a nose for the ball, Dyer spent most of his time as an undersized post. But while he may not have been a focal point on the offensive end, Dyer did as he was told and certainly was a huge contributor for the Black Tornado, especially on the boards where he ended up averaging 9.4 rpg – good enough for third in all of 6A. He’s not resting on those laurels.
“The coaches had a plan for us to win games so I was mainly a rebound and defense guy, but I feel that I can do more than that this year and play a bigger role,” Dyer said. “Over the quarantine period I’ve restructured my shot and it seems a lot more consistent. We have two really good shooters on our team but with me expanding my game out more I might take more threes a game. I’ve also been working on a vertical program and have added two or three inches so I can dunk more consistently.”
While Dyer hopes to get more opportunities from the perimeter, he does understand he will still be one of the tallest guys on the team so he will likely still be playing a lot in the post. That’s fine with him as he is effective around the basket, with some solid footwork and a soft touch around the rim.
An all-around athlete, Dyer also plays football but is hoping to pursue basketball at the college level. Since he’s largely under the radar the most from college he’s heard from so far are schools in the NWAC as well as Pacific, where he’s had a relationship with assistant coach Brant Minor for quite some time. An outstanding student with a 4.0 GPA, he’s aiming high but keeping all of his options open.
“Obviously I’d like to go Division I and that’s my ultimate goal, but I would like to play pretty much anywhere because I love playing basketball,” Dyer said. “If it’s a big enough school I’d pretty much go anywhere but I’d like to stay on the West Coast preferably.”
While he’s been working out on his own, Dyer is hopeful that AAU basketball will start back up and when it does, he notes that he’ll be running with the MBA Lakers. He currently ranks as the #31 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2022 rankings.
