Border League: Best Creators

HENDERSON, Nev. — The Border League has become one of the premier fall high school and prep school basketball events in the country and the 2026 event lived up to the hype. More than 150 teams from across the country made the trip to Southern Nevada to participate in the three day event. We were in the gym from morning until night at the Henderson Sport & Social and Coronado high school locations and below is our takeaways of the event's best creators with a mix of SoCal and National prospects. Ona Embo is a lightning-quick point guard whose ability to maintain control and composure while playing at a fast pace allowed him to make smart and measured decisions with the ball. The senior guard used his end-to-end speed with the ball to put pressure on the rim in transition and his burst and acceleration to earn downhill paint touches in half-court settings. Ona Embo brought a pass-first mindset to the floor and was an effective table-setter for his teammates. Black is, in my estimation, the best point guard prospect in the country and it's because of his combination of elite basketball feel and dynamic presence on the floor as an athlete and off-bounce creator. The 6-foot-3 senior is a lethal pull-up jump shooter from three and mid-range, plays at his own pace without getting sped up and is a high quality decision-maker in a variety of on-court situations. Black has the basketball IQ to shift from a pass-first mindset to an aggressive scoring one when needed and showed tremendous leadership qualities in Sunday's game against Compass Prep where SEPA battled back from a large half-time deficit. Muñoz has the ball in his hands quite a bit for La Mirada and good things always seem to happen when he is running the offense. The 5-foot-11 senior can really pass - meaning he delivers them with good timing and accuracy in a variety of settings. Muñoz can push the tempo in transition but doesn't force the issue and instead surveys the floor and decides whether there's an advantage or not. He's very effective in running the Matadores' half-court offense where his ball screen IQ, ability to make reads and knowing his teammates' strengths and weaknesses leads to him generating good shots. Sati-Grier's creating comes in multiple forms and a lot of the time it starts with his defensive prowess. The scrappy 6-foot junior is one of the best on-ball defenders in his class with his lateral quickness, cat-quick hands and endless energy when pressuring the ball generating turnovers that turn into quick offense in transition for Sierra Canyon. Sati-Grier possesses blurring speed and quickness with the ball which leads to him putting pressure on the rim, collapsing defenses and finding open teammates. Rose blends a combination of strength, physicality, explosiveness, skill and passing IQ that makes him one of the Nation's top prospects. At 6-feet-3 with a college-ready frame, the junior creates offense for himself and teammates by powering his way into the lane at-will to force help which opens up lob passes to bigs or kick-out passes to open shooters. Rose was also manipulating the defense in ball screen situations where he delivered some tremendous lobs and hook passes on a dime. Patterson has become one of the fastest-rising prospects in SoCal's 2028 class. The 6-foot point guard is a dynamic two-way creator whose ability to create turnovers with his defense leads to high percentage offensive looks. Patterson is a disruptive on-ball defender who cleanly rips opponents and gets deflections but he is best in passing lanes where his anticipation and speed shine. Offensively, Patterson has great feel in the mid-range area of the floor with a consistent pull-up jumper and floater but is at his best when getting into the teeth of the defense and into the body of shot blockers to score at the rim or get to the free throw line. Montague spent his first two seasons as an understudy and sidekick to a high level point guard in Mason Magee and Basha looks to not have missed a beat with Montague taking the reins. The 6-foot-1 combo guard burst onto the scene as an off-ball scoring type of prospect who has successfully transitioned to primary ball-handler and creator this season. Montague still has that elite scoring punch, and uses it when needed, but it was clear to see the overall growth in his approach to the offensive end. Anderson's smoothness, fluidity and simplicity with the ball in his hands led to him making high IQ reads and decisions in transition and half-court situations. The senior has good positional size and length and uses it to his advantage when seeing over the defense to diagnose in ball screen action. Anderson is a patient, thorough and high IQ decision-maker who rarely forced passes into tight spaces and handled pressure with poise. Gordon brought a relentless level of energy and toughness to both ends of the floor for Spire in its win over Calvary Christian of Florida. Gordon was one of many tasked with containing Cayden Daughtry, one of the country's best scorers, and his on-ball defensive pressure, off-ball denials and sheer annoyance as a defender forced Daughtry to work hard for every look he got. Gordon brings the same aggressiveness and toughness to the offensive end where his speed, quickness and strength allow him to make up for any perceived lack of height to earn paint touches which he creates out of at a high level.
