2030 Point Guards to Watch at Prep Hoops Frosh Showcase

The annual Prep Hoops Wisconsin Freshmen Showcase is set for September 5th at the Community First Champion Center in Appleton. It will be the first time to get a look at many of the top prospects in the state in the class of 2030. Here is a quick rundown of some of the better point guard prospects among the 100-plus players registered to participate in the event.   Registrations are still being accepted for the Showcase. The son of former Neenah standout Mike Blank, [player_tooltip player_id='2403316' first='Braeden' last='Blank'] is a very skilled combination guard and part of a deep and talented 2030 class at Neenah that also includes forward [player_tooltip player_id='3043349' first='Chase' last='Kramer'], a 6-foot-4, 210-pound forward currently playing for the varsity football team at Neenah. Like his father, Blank is a good shooter with deep range and could very well battle for a spot on the JV1 squad with the Rockets this winter.     Talented backcourt prospect who played some varsity basketball in the summer the past two years with Kingdom Prep Lutheran, Briley-Carter opted to attend Milwaukee Academy of Science and joins as loaded incoming class for the Novas. Originally thought to be a class of 2029 prospect, Briley-Carter decided to wait a year to begin high school and comes to MAS with an advanced skill, good physical strength and outstanding court vision.     The younger brother of current New Berlin West senior standout [player_tooltip player_id='2371703' first='Jayce' last='Cook'] and son of Vikings' head coach Scott Cook,, [player_tooltip player_id='3720027' first='Rhys' last='Cook'] obviously comes from a basketball family. Rhys is a strong player physically who uses his body well to score and get to the foul line. Cook can score at all three levels and was the top scorer on the 24:UP JrP32 team this past club season.     Ferguson grew up in the D.C. Everest program, but he moved to Wisconsin Rapids over the summer and has enrolled at Lincoln High School. He figures to immediately contend for a starting spot with the Red Raiders as his quickness, ball skills and feel for the game are going to be big assets for coach Phil Jagielo. Ferguson performed well for Wisconsin Rapids on the summer high school circuit and joins a program that brings back four players who started at times last winter on a 6-20 squad.     The son of former New Berlin Eisenhower 1,000-point scorer and UW-Stevens Point wing David Grzesk and the nephew of current St. Norbert College coach Gary Grzesk, [player_tooltip player_id='2893550' first='Michael' last='Grzesk'] was a key performer for the ultra-talented Kevon Loony Power 5 squad this past club season. He has an outstanding feel for the game, is smooth with the ball and defends with his quickness and length. He figures to be a staple in the Milwaukee Academy of Science lineup the next four years.     When you grow up playing against and with a talented older brother, chances are you are going to develop into a pretty darn good player in your own right. Such is the case for Kelbel, who figures to join his older brother, sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2369875' first='Jacob' last='Kelbel'], on the talented varsity squad at Altoona this winter. [player_tooltip player_id='2369876' first='Jaxon' last='Kelbel'] has very good size and a skillset that is quite advanced for his age. He is part of a talented 2030 class at Altoona that also includes guard [player_tooltip player_id='3667919' first='Brennan' last='Henrichs'], the son of Rails' coach Paul Henrichs.     Without question one of the top players in the state's 2030 class, Krull proved over the summer he more than belonged on the varsity court with the talented returning players from Stevens Point. The son of Stevens Point coach Jon Krull, [player_tooltip player_id='3684005' first='Keegan' last='Krull'] is poised, plays with a high basketball IQ, has excellent quickness and can make big shots. Krull is pesky on defense due to his speed and physicality. He also is one of the elite passers in the state's 2030 class.     The younger brother of Platteville senior wing [player_tooltip player_id='2552683' first='Grady' last='Poppy'], [player_tooltip player_id='3681202' first='Hudson' last='Poppy'] joins coach Mike Huser's program this year with the chance to earn some significant playing time for a deep and talented team. He possesses good size, excellent ball handling, passing and shooting skills, and a solid feel for the game. Poppy is expected to be the top 2030 player in the Southwest Wisconsin Conference and a key player for the Hillmen over the next four seasons.     The next in line as a stellar backcourt prospect for powerhouse Wisconsin Lutheran, Zarate might have to play on the JV1 squad this winter due to the deep talent in the Vikings' program, but most consider him one of the better players in the state's 2030 class. Like others on this list, Zarate has a high basketball IQ and advanced skills for his age. A key player for a very good [program_tooltip program_id='2440507' first='Davis' last='Brothers Elite'] 14U squad this past club season, Zarate can play either guard spot and is a dependable shooter as well.
