Wilsonville Summer Tourney - Top Performers (I)

Wilsonville hosted its annual summer tournament on June 19-21 with a loaded field that included some of the top teams in the Portland Metro area. We had the opportunity to drop by and catch a number of games and here are some of the top performers we watched.    There is something about the gym at Wilsonville that Williams loves because for the second summer in a row he was near unstoppable. In Jesuit's opening round game against Centennial, the rising senior guard wasn't necessarily hitting from three but got his mid-range and game going to the hoop in gear, drawing and absorbing all sorts of contact and converting the resulting free throw opportunities. Add on 5 rebounds and 3 assists to his 16 points and it was just the start of a great tournament for Williams, one in which he led the Crusaders to a second-straight title.     One thing is going to be painfully clear in 2026-27 for Mountainside - a lot of the offensive load will be resting on Ochoa's shoulders. Given what we saw in Wilsonville, the rising senior is more than capable of taking on the challenge as he certainly showed he can score in multiple ways. Known throughout his high school career as a shooter, he knocked down a couple of threes in the semifinals against Cleveland but also used a number of dribble-drive moves to free himself in the mid-range and going to the basket. Add on 6 rebounds and some nice work on the defensive end and Ochoa helped Mountainside reach the title game for the second year in a row.     Tremendous all-around scoring game from Harper-Grant in Grant's opening round win over West Linn, as he posted 21 points - without even hitting a three-pointer. The rising junior was tough in the mid-range and getting to the basket, where he was able to absorb contact and get to the line for opportunities. He was a solid contributor on the glass, using his length and athleticism to grab 7 rebounds, and dished out 3 assists as well.     One of the top risers this summer has undoubtedly been Sanders, who showed in Wilsonville he doesn't necessarily have to be scoring points to make an impact in games. In Grant's win over West Linn, that aforementioned impact was on the boards and defensively, as he pulled down 11 rebounds and created havoc with his length and quickness with both steals and blocked shots. One of the most electric finishers in the state, the lefty got loose on the break for a highlight reel dunk. Sanders recently received his first D-I offer from Bethune-Cookman.     Johnson is a combination of athleticism and toughness, and the rising senior put those to use in a late round win over Wilsonville. The lefty is very difficult to stop when he aggressively goes to his strong left hand but capably finished plays around the hoop with his right hand as well. He finished with a team-high 16 points but one of the other reasons why Johnson has drawn collegiate recruiting attention - including an early offer from OIT - is because of his attention on the defensive end as well, where he registered a couple of blocks and steals.     It was a tough weekend for Lomber as he was playing the same week after the passing of his father, but the rising senior wing channeled that emotion into some very inspired play, especially on the offensive end. He capably scored on all three levels and used his athleticism to finish above the rim on numerous occasions, but also showed tremendous leadership skills in helping Valley Catholic grab a couple of wins over bigger schools.
