I spent the weekend taking in HS basketball at two different live period events: DMV Live at DeMatha Catholic in Maryland and Philly Live in Pennsylvania. The goal was to see as many high-level players and teams as possible to get a pulse for talent both in and outside of my area of the DMV. In this article we will break down some of the top incoming freshmen and rising sophomores that I saw this weekend as the next wave of talent that will impact HS hoops. Let's dive in to the top guard prospects that I saw!

14p 8r 1a vs St. John's

-Copeland emerged victorious out of physical win over St. John's after hitting an elbow jumper to win the game at the buzzer. Copeland has good positional size and a strong frame that he combines with an effective spin move to maneuver around the defense to score in the key. Copeland hit several extension layups over bigs, knocked down a no-dip 3 off the catch, hit an AND1 spin layup off the glass, used his pivot to up fake and spin to score over a big, and hit the elbow jumper off of an offensive rebound for game. A young point guard playing this confidently at both ends of the floor bodes well for his long term outcomes if he can sharpen the handle and use his paint touches to create for teammates in addition to the scoring. Love both the ceiling and the floor for this young prospect.

-Scott is adjusting well to a steady role for a Gonzaga team that injected some very talented pieces to the varsity team from both their freshman class and last year's JV groups. Scott functions well as an off-ball guard that has the IQ to know when to call for a ball screen, when to attack closeouts, when to shoot, and when to keep the ball flowing around the perimeter. His instincts as an off-ball defender that goads opponents into throwing cross-court passes that he can pick off and begin a fastbreak with make him much more effective on that end of the floor. Love the way that he stepped in to take and make some big 3s that put away the win for Gonzaga.

11p 4a 1r 3s vs Imhotep

-The confidence and play-making continues to improve for the rising sophomore as an effective combo guard that can shoot, pass, and score with or without a ball screen. Schneeberg rebounded well from a scoreless 1H to hit his opponent with an in n out cross to get the paint touch and kick to the corner shooter, ran off a baseline pin down to knock down a corner 3 off the SLOB, hit his opponent with a euro step to lay it cleanly off the window then came up with a steal and layup before calmly throwing a post feed for the game-tying bucket. His feel as an on-ball defender

17p 6r 5a vs Hazleton

-First time seeing Robinson play and came away impressed with his feel on the floor--especially for a rising sophomore-- as a guard prospect that can do a little bit of everything. Robinson started things off with an extension lay past the defense in transition, curled around a screen at the elbow to score off quick give n go, hit his matchup with a euro step and reverse layup in transition, dove for a steal that led to a corner 3 for his team, and hit a DEEP 3 from the wing off the catch. Robinson gets his within the flow of the game but is an assertive downhill driver constantly looking to create for his teammates. His play in transition allowed his team to blow the game open for a nice win to open their live period weekend.

10p 2a 1s 1 charge drawn vs Sidwell

-The incoming freshman point guard came in hot off the bench in both games that I saw to serve as a dynamic creator that proved successful both on and off-ball for the Panthers. Braswell pushed pace well in transition and made all the right leads, has an advanced handle that allows him to break his matchup down without a ball screen, attacked second-side closeouts well from the wing to hit elbow jumpers or generate a paint touch to dime up one of his bigs, and moved effectively off the ball with good timing on his cuts from the corners to score at the rim or hit teammates with quick touch passes. He has a great change of pace with his dribble, also showed a complete bag of crossover and finishing moves around the basket to score through contact or over taller defenders. With his blend of feel, skill, and quickness-- I think he will be the next in a long line of successful PGs to come out of Imhotep.
