Continuing on with my coverage, here were 5 guards that really impressed me.

Gueye was one of RI Elite's most confident penetrators and all-around offensive players on Saturday. The 6-foot-4 combo-guard has great size for his position, but he knows how to use his body effectively, which is more important; he plays at his own pace in the pick and roll, and he can handle and shoot it well enough to make the defense play him on the perimeter. Gueye is a super intriguing piece to RI Elite's athletic and big 16u squad, and I'll be curious to see how he continues to develop this season. He's only a sophomore, so he has a lot more time to figure everything out.

Whenever I watch Njenga during AAU, I remember the dynamic scoring ability that he presents (which is sometimes not as prevalent during the high school season with his ultra-talented St. George's squad). The 6-foot guard is so under-control and balanced with the ball in his hands, so he's great at hitting little turnaround shots and floaters in the lane, even when defenders try to overpower him and push him off his spot. He gets by his initial defender effortlessly, and then he makes good decisions in the lane for himself or others. An improved three-point shooting stroke would be a key turning point in Njenga's recruitment going forward, and this AAU season will be a key time for him to work on it.

Ellis-Cipriano looked excellent this weekend. The 6-foot-2 guard was shifty with the ball in his hands and showed off some special athleticism at the hoop, including a crazy contested dunk against BABC (he didn't look like he had any business dunking the rock on a baseline drive, but it was the best poster I saw this weekend). He uses his length quite well at the hoop for finishes, but he can also shoot it from the outside and plays with a good pace and feel. I'm not sure where Ellis-Cipriano will end up next season, but high D3 programs should be extremely intrigued by his combination of athleticism, skill, and length. Some D2's will probably be interested, too, as he already has an offer from Monroe University.

This is going to be an extremely important AAU season for Hunter-Coleman. He spent his winter with the Newman School, playing a fundamental style in which he didn't have too significant an offensive role. But if this first weekend was any indication, he'll show a lot more of his offensive game this spring for BABC. The 6-foot guard shot the ball well from the outside (this will be a KEY skill for him to master) against Team Sims, but he also showcased special athleticism on the way to the rim on a number of occasions. He shoots with his left hand but is more effective driving to his right, so he has a unique play-style that makes him hard to stay in front of. The on-ball reps will be huge for Hunter-Coleman this spring, and I'm excited to see some more parts to his game.

Gibson was phenomenal for Team Sims this weekend, especially in their first game against RI Elite. The 6-foot-3 combo-guard does an amazing job using his strength; he's far too strong for most sophomore guards and consistently shows it on drives to the rim and rebounds. But he also makes really good decisions in the paint and knows how to set up his teammates for easy looks. He had some trouble with turnovers against BABC, but he was special as both a scorer and facilitator against RI Elite—he completely controlled the tempo of the game and put his teammates in advantageous spots. Gibson is a great candidate to have a massively improved role at Brooks next season, which could be spurred on by some big performances this spring.
