Player of the Year: 2026 [player_tooltip player_id='1978106' first='Shay' last='Stephens'] (Burlington Notre Dame)
24.5 points, 9.2 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 3.1 steals, 61.6 FG%, 37.4 3PT%, 70.9 FT%

One of the easier selections in all classes, Stephens was the best all-around playe in 1A, bar none. A big guard that could see over the defense, attack off the dribble, shoot from the outside, get boards, create for himself and others while taking efficient shots, and so much more, Stephens was beyond sensational for Burlington Notre Dame this winter. A player that would've been successful not matter the class or level he played in, Stephens was so much more than just a scorer or a facilitator at the point guard position for the Nikes.

With a quick first step, vision to find open shooters, athleticism to defend and throw down some dunks, plus the killer instinct, Stpehens was everything a lead guard should be. He did it all for his squad, coming up just shy of the 1A state title, running into the buzz saw that was St. Edmond this season. Most other years, the Nikes would've looked primed to take home a state championship, thanks, in large part, to the play of their star point guard.

2026 [player_tooltip player_id='1460951' first='Eli' last='Dee'] (Baxter)
29.5 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 2.5 steals, 56.3 FG%, 88.3 FT%

The top scorer in 1A this winter, Dee went to work against other small-school opponents in central Iowa. A versatile, 6-foot-4 playmaker for the Bolts, the Upper Iowa commit possessed guard skills on top of his large frame, making him an incredibly difficult player to defend for both guards and forwards in the state's smallest class. Able to get out and run to throw down dunks, but also cross over between his legs before lifting and firing from 23+ feet, Dee was took quick for bigs to chase down and too long for guards to get a hand in his face.

Like many of these 1A hoopers, Dee was a volume shooter for Baxter, putting up 455 shots this winter while also getting to the charity stripe -- and making those free throws -- at an excellent rate. Taking 180 free throws this season and making them at nearly 90%, Dee was a bucket that could shoot from anywhere on the floor with the threat to get down hill and score on layups, but also able to draw fouls and get easy points for the Bolts.

2026 [player_tooltip player_id='1907683' first='Hunter' last='Horn'] (St. Edmond)
25.9 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, 1.4 steals, 56.2 FG%

Horn was a do-it-all forward for the Gaels this winter. Wanting to close out his senior year and his coach's final year at the helm in Fort Dodge, Horn took Adolph Kochendorfer and St. Edmond all the way there, winning 16 straight games to end the season, with 15 of those victories coming by double digits. Horn's biggest strength was as a shooter in the mid-range, making shots from the baseline and elbow look like layups. Not just shooting to shoot, either, he made over half of the 516 shots he took during his senior campaign.

Horn most effectively used his length on both ends of the court, regularly blocking shots -- almost two per game, in fact -- around the rim simply by going straight up or employing excellent timing to swat shots. As a scorer, he could reach past defenders for layups and use footwork to turn and get a shot up at the rim. One can tell this season was the culmination of a lot of years on the court, as he nearly perfected the use of a Euro-step, plus a jump-stop and high-gather to sneak past defenders for buckets in the paint.

2028 [player_tooltip player_id='2439640' first='Jevyn' last='Severson'] (Madrid)
24.5 points, 10 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 63.3 FG%, 35.7 3PT%, 75.2 FT%

Flat-out one of the best athletes the state has to offer, Severson took the 2028 Player of the Year honors from Prep Hoops Iowa after the monstrous season he put together for Madrid. A Power 4 football prospect with offers from programs like Indiana, Tennessee, Florida, Vanderbilt, Nebraska and others, Severson is the classic tight end-forward combo that excels in both sports.

With spatial awareness as a ball-hanlder and a post-presence for the Tigers, plus athleticism that far exceeds anyone else in the class, Severson may be one of, if not the best prospect in multiple sports that the state has to offer next season. Possessing the ability to put the ball on the floor and blow by any defenders his size, shoot the three, get out in transition and go coast-to-coast, turn defense into offense, navigate space without turning the ball over and so much more, Severson is a hooper. If football weren't in his future, Severson could easily play Division I basketball, too.

2026 [player_tooltip player_id='1765521' first='Cal' last='Heydon'] (Coon Rapids-Bayard)
23.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 2.7 steals, 55.1 FG%, 39.1 3PT%, 70.3 FT%

A multi-sport star for Coon Rapids-Bayard, Heydon is an Iowa Western baseball commit that shine on the court for the Crusaders, too. A longtime, top-tier athlete in his part of the state, Heydon finished his career at CRB having scored 20.2 or more points per game from his freshman year to his senior campaign. Heydon is a player with one of the more polished skillsets in the state, able to do a little of everything -- scoring off the bounce, fighting for rebounds with his 6-foot-4 height and thick frame, get put-back buckets with his size and strength, and making threes at a near 40% clip.

Coming up just shy of the state tournament this season, Heydon and the Crusaders were a feared opponent night-in and night-out for 1A and 2A programs alike in the northwest part of the state, as he could and CRB could beat you in a variety of ways -- shooting from the outside, dominating in the paint, turning you over and scoring virtually at-will.
