KEYS TO THE GAME

The first half was a back-and-forth battle before Madison La Follette used a late flurry of points to take a 52-43 lead into the locker room at intermission. The Lancers came out inspired in the second half as coach Torrance Holmes' squad scored the first nine points to push the lead to 61-43. The lead grew to 40 by the eight-minute mark and a running clock was put into use. The Lancers simply had too many offensive weapons to keep down for an entire 36 minutes. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1561953' first='Thian' last='Riak'] (6-5) finished with 30 points and six dunks for Madison La Follette, much to the delight of the large student section attending the game. Riak's output was especially noteworthy as he did not play in the Lancers' season-opening 70-64 overtime loss to Kettle Moraine last week. Riak also missed almost all of last season and the spring/summer season while recovering from an injury. Steady junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='2140977' first='Reese' last='Jordan'] (6-2) added 24 points to the Madison La Follette cause.

OK. So here's the deal with [player_tooltip player_id='1561953' first='Thian' last='Riak']. He has not played in a high school basketball game in just over a year due to an injury he sustained early last season. He also missed all spring and summer. He came back a bit in the fall, but now is back full time. That is great news for the Lancers of Madison La Follette and for basketball fans in general. He finished with 30 points and six dunks in the win over Kenosha Tremper. He announced his presence on the court about three minutes into the contest with a massive one-handed tomahawk dunk in traffic. His size, length, smooth stroke and eye-popping athleticism will give Big Eight opponents trouble all winter. Here's hoping Riak can use his senior season at La Follette to attract a bunch of attention from scholarship-level collegiate coaches. He's off to a great start.

Believe it or not, it's already Jordan's third year of varsity basketball. After playing well as a freshman at Madison East and even better as a sophomore at Madison La Follette, Jordan took on the leadership role for La Follette in its win over Kenosha Tremper. He picked his spots to use his strength and ability to make shots facing the basket or with his back to the basket while scoring 24 points. His steady play, solid ball handling and impressive decision making will be crucial as La Follette attempts to win a Big Eight championship.

The backcourt at Madison La Follete is impressive, to say the least. In addition to the improved Prewitt, the Lancers boast additional guard standouts in Jordan and sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2399542' first='CJ' last='Costello']. Prewitt, who has grown some since the end of last season, knocked down a couple of three-point jump shots, scored in transition and got to the basket and foul line against Kenosha Tremper. He finished with a workmanlike 14-point effort at La Follette even its mark at 1-1.

The latest in a line of Baldwin brothers to be involved in athletics at Kenosha Tremper, Baldwin was a dependable scorer on the blocks in the first half as Kenosha Tremper stayed close to potent Madison La Follette through the first half. Baldwin utilized his size, strength, ball fakes and verticality to score near the hoop on the way to finishing with 11 points. He was also a positive factor on the glass and with his ability to defend near the basket for coach Brandon Morris' club.

THE BIG PICTURE

Madison La Follette played without Riak in its 70-64 OT loss to Kettle Moraine last week. The Lancers took the painful lessons of that loss and the addition of Riak to showcase their considerable talent in a running-clock win over Kenosha Tremper. So with Riak back in the lineup, La Follette looks to two additional games this week. The Lancers host Janesville Craig on Thursday before traveling to Sun Prairie East on Saturday.

Kenosha Tremper, which played its campaign lid lifter against La Follette, will play a makeup game with The Prairie School in Racine on Wednesday. The game had originally been planned for last Saturday at Racine Case, but that wonderful snow storm forced postponement. Tremper then plays its first home game of the season on Friday when it hosts city rival Kenosha Bradford in a Southeast Conference outing.
