First Week of Coverage in Columbus – Shane Garcia

This week I was in Columbus for Mansfield Seniors (1-0) win over Columbus Academy (0-2), 67-63, and Friday night for Hilliard Bradley (1-1) win over Upper Arlington (0-1), 54-48 in overtime. This team is going to have to lean on him heavily this season, and what does he do in that situation? Oh, just has the stat line of 40 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 6 steals. This kid can do it all. His length and athleticism on the defensive end are a nightmare at the top of the 1-3-1 zone, but he can also take someone out of the game when he locks in on them defensively. He had some explosive plays athletically on both ends of the floor. His ability to go coast to coast was extremely impressive. The biggest thing that impressed me with him was his improved shooting ability from beyond the arc. He is a knock-down shooter off the dribble, off balance, and catch and shoot coming off of screens. When Columbus Academy was making its second-half comeback effort, it was because he completely took the game over in the 4th quarter. He was one of the only players in the game who was in a rhythm. This really stands out in a game like this one, but it also shows how impressive an offensive player he is. His midrange bag is super deep. He has a great touch in the midrange and was able to score fading away, using his pivot, and making shots with a hand in his face. He did a good job of getting downhill and scoring around the rim. His leadership also really stood out, especially for a sophomore. He was seen communicating with teammates throughout the entire game. He is the clear leader of this team, and his team plays just like him. With confidence and edge, not backing down to anyone. This is impressive to begin with as a sophomore, and then his skill is elite. He was really good at getting downhill and had some amazing touch around the rim. He had multiple acrobatic finishes. He was great at making one move in a one-on-one situation and blowing by and scoring in the lane. He is a really good shot maker from beyond the arc as well. He can catch and shoot it and also come off screens well. He is a senior guard for this team and could be a big reason why they have such a good season. When the game started to get out of reach in the second quarter, Johnson was the reason for it. He was causing multiple turnovers and scoring fastbreak points. He plays with a ton of energy and defensive intensity. He is a big player who moves his feet very well. Against Mansfield Senior, a guard-heavy team, he had multiple situations when he needed to guard a quicker guard on the perimeter, and he did a great job. He used his length to recover and have multiple blocks. He was good on the rebounds, and I think he would be even better against a team that is not so guard-heavy.
