Lets take a look at this region's top teams and players as we journey into the beginning of the season.

Patton has already established himself as one of the Coalfield region's top players as well as one of the top 2027's in WV. Eli is a multi-faceted point guard with vision, scoring ability and great motor. The stat line as a sophomore reads as 15ppg, 3.5reb, 4ast with a 38% rate from deep. Patton will lead a talented Summit Christian into SSAC play and will have the opportunity to be noticed and show his ability. We've been able to see him multiple times during showcases as well as travel/AAU events and he's impressed during every one. Eli will not only lead his team in multiple stat categories but he will make players around him better with getting them the ball in timely fashion.

State Tournament Qualifier Prediction

Summit Christian: With what we know of Summit's past challenging schedules and the successes of it, this year looks like a great year for this school to return to the SSAC (formerly Mercer Christian). With arguably the regions two best players in Patton and Carpenter it should be enough to breeze through this region and get onto the Civic Center floor in Charleston. Coach Matt Patton has historically done a great job of working young guys into the lineup and getting them seasoned to step into bigger roles the following year and this year will be no different.

Greater Beckley Christian: A return to Charleston for GBC seems like one of the most likely locks in terms of state tourney qualifier predictions. GBC players are experienced, road tested and ready to make a legit run not just to Charleston but deep into the tournament as well. Coach Justin Arvron is no stranger to the state tournament and

Darkhorse

I think the obvious Darkhorse here is Sherman. With two wins vs state qualifier Montcalm last year when both teams on had one senior between both rosters is an indicator that Sherman is a threat to be a competitor in the region. Of course over the past several months many things can happen to a roster that affect the upcoming season for anyone so that is something to be considered here. Montcalm, considering their roster is in tact from last years tournament team can make a compelling argument that they are a legit darkhorse or even a favorite to advance yet again. Time will tell.

Regional Roundabout

A team to watch here is Mount View. With several players having varsity experience and posting a good record last year this squad could emerge in the second half of the season.

GBC has recently had the addition of transfer [player_tooltip player_id='2340458' first='Marshall' last='Dorado']. Dorado could be their best player this season as he's an accomplished scorer at guard and has had a great offseason testing himself against higher level competition.

Summit Christian makes their way into WVSSAC status this year and will be an immediate force. Formerly known as Mercer Christian who might ring a bell with state tournament attendees in the past 20+ years as they had made an unlikely run to Charleston in 2005 losing to Parkersburg Catholic by 6.
