Class of 2027: Tone Setting Guards

Built like a running back, Sykes can do it all on the court. A budding lead guard, he's always been capable of getting downhill. And now is improving his vision to be a key creator for an unselfish and deep Knight squad. Will also likely always have the top defensive assignment, as he proved this past spring and summer that he can cover top national 2027 guards and wings. An impressive aspect is along with working hard as a primary defender, he still has the grit and energy to make hustle plays for loose balls, taking charges and more.     Robinson has always been among the better athletes in the Class. Now as a junior, he's matured in tough two way threat. Recent viewings have made evident the pride he takes on the defensive end. All while becoming more of a well rounded slasher with improved vision. On a team loaded with talent, the sparks that Robinson will give on both ends of the court will be crucial for Mustang to make their first State Tournament appearance since 2016.     Can't have this list without Mr Energy. "Joey Ball" has shaken off a summer injury and now will have the opportunity to refine his all action playing style under coach Jesse Brown. Before Brown took over Newcastle, he was a key assistant during a run at Putnam City West where they specialized in hard nosed guards. The blue collar coaching mentality has also been applied at Newcastle, where Folsom's energy should be a natural fit. While scoring and shooting should improve this year, it's important he never forgets his foundation as a tenacious defender.     Matthews is currently killing it on the gridiron as a powerful running back. He'll likely serve a similar big role for the Titans in the gym. Strong and powerful, he's a transition monster. While also capable of being a tough slasher in the halfcourt. Over the years, the best Titans teams have had football standouts setting the tone. Matthews will be that this year, while also providing a scoring punch.     Scott is all action with the ball in his hands. Crafty and tough, he's an example of an offensive tonesetter. He'll find ways to get paint touches, to not only score himself. But set up teammates for easy scores. Has moments of showtime in transition, as his motor doesn't stop running. It's clear he often leaves it all on the court. His energetic play has already translated to one State Tournament appearance for Fort Gibson. And has them well positioned to make another run at the Class 4A crown.     A football standout first, Hawkins will still play a very key role for the 4A contending Cougars. Just like on the football field, he plays like an opportunistic DB. Capable of mirroring and shutting down foes. Or succesfully gambling for big play turnovers. North Rock Creek has a streak of three straight Class 4A State Tournament appearances, in large part because of their "We>Me" mentality. Hawkins will be a great example of their mindeset with the tone he sets on the defensive end.     Jones looks ready for a breakout season with the Bombers. And hopefully he maintains the same chip on the shoulder that he has showed in previous viewings. As that allows him to play fast and bigger than his height. Quick and shifty when attacking the rim in the halfcourt, has good hangtime body control to finish. His quickness and aggressiveness on defense leads to havoc causing plays. Speed and energy can change games, and Jones will do just that for 5A powerhouse MWC.
