Hawkins showed tremendous energy and athleticism in the narrow loss to Fort Gibson in the state quarterfinals. The Cougars were able to push their halftime lead to nine points thanks to a Hawkins putback at the buzzer. Hawkins worked hard for position in the paint before securing the offensive rebound that led the the bucket at the horn. The junior provided effort plays throughout the game and collected seven rebounds to go along with his 10 points. At 6’1″, Tyson is a rangy, fluid athlete that also has a long wingspan. Look for him to continue to develop his offensive game as he will be a senior leader for his club next season.

An energetic multiple sport standout, he was all over the paint. Playing much bigger than his height thanks to his hops. Was part of NRC closing the first half strong, first drawing a key foul on a rebound attempt. Finished with 10 points and 9 rebounds. All toughness and grit, even taking a big charge in the second half.

A football standout first, Hawkins will still play a very key role for the 4A contending Cougars. Just like on the football field, he plays like an opportunistic DB. Capable of mirroring and shutting down foes. Or succesfully gambling for big play turnovers. North Rock Creek has a streak of three straight Class 4A State Tournament appearances, in large part because of their “We>Me” mentality. Hawkins will be a great example of their mindeset with the tone he sets on the defensive end.

Considering that Hawkins is a multi-sport athlete, it wasn’t shocking that he was making plays on the ball like a defensive back. He’s quick and plays with great anticipation for steals, then quickly turns defense into offense. Stepped up and provided scoring when needed during Unity’s run to the 17U title. Including clutch scoring in the semifinal victory over the Servants. Then repeated those efforts in the title game. There’s always room on the court for plus athletes, who compete and do the dirty work.
