The month of September provides a key chance for High Schools to get back to work and display their prospects to College Coaches. Today, I was in Greenville, South Carolina, to check out Legacy Early College, the newest member of the SCHSL. Check out this deep dive into some of their top players and what could be in store for the team as a whole in 2025-26:

Open Practice Evaluations:

[player_tooltip player_id='1621536' first='Lance' last='Barnes'] - First up on the list of evaluations from Monday's Open Practice is [player_tooltip player_id='1621536' first='Lance' last='Barnes']. Not only is Lance Legacy's best player, but he is also their hardest worker and best example for younger players. He was dove on the floor multiple times during the 4 on 4 part of practice and majored in all the minor details it takes to be great. Apart from the hustle plays and leading-by-example, Barnes also flashed his skill with his quickness in dribbling drills, fundamentally sound footwork at the rim, and athletic finishing.

[player_tooltip player_id='2970403' first='Andreylen' last='Craig'] - This is a new name to the database coming off my trip to Greenville. Craig was the best shooter in the Lions' three-point shooting drills, displaying a good feel for drifting the open space, shot-ready feet and hands, and an ability to knock down open looks. He was also effective on the glass and punished smaller guards in the paint, but like his fellow Senior Barnes, Andreylen was a leader amongst this group and encouraged intensity with his play.

[player_tooltip player_id='2396551' first='Bowen' last='Swofford'] - Bowen should see an increased role for his new team after coming over from Mauldin HS. Today was his first practice back from a minor ankle injury, so he wasn't 100%, but he did move pretty well in individual drills. He was able to display both speed and vision with the ball in his hands, as well as good touch at the rim and comfort in the mid-range. Swofford will also be a decent shooting option, but it's the playmaking ability that has this staff most excited.

[player_tooltip player_id='2970405' first='R'Javion' last='Booker'] - Booker is a guy who could end up being one of the best in his class over the next four years. He doesn't look like a Freshman - neither physically nor talent-wise. During shooting drills, he was effective behind the arc and off one or two dribbles in the mid-range. Once they switched into live 3 on 3 and 4 on 4 action, R'Javion excelled within the team's offense, and once it broke down, frequently creating good looks for others and scoring difficult shots against good defense.

[player_tooltip player_id='2970406' first='Garvin' last='Shuford'] - Rounding out the list is another member of Legacy's talented Freshman Class, [player_tooltip player_id='2970406' first='Garvin' last='Shuford']. He has come along quickly and will only continue to earn minutes as he develops physically. He looked more comfortable making decisions and executing plays with each practice rep. Garvin also has length that is noticeable on both ends of the floor as he kept the ball away from defenders and made life difficult for opponents.

Team Takeaway:

While the Lions won't be competing for championships in the 2025-26 Season because they departed the Nike EYBL Scholastic League and joined the South Carolina High School League, that doesn't mean their players won't still be competing for scholarships. Expect this group to play with "house money" each night, knowing wins and losses don't necessarily have the same weight. This is the last chance for guys like [player_tooltip player_id='1621536' first='Lance' last='Barnes'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2844134' first='Zion' last='McGee'] to earn opportunities to play next level, but also a chance for freshmen like [player_tooltip player_id='2970405' first='R'Javion' last='Booker'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2970406' first='Garvin' last='Shuford'] to leave a good first impression on College Coaches.
