The final events of the Spring leg of the Prep Hoops Circuit took place this past weekend. As three states in the Grit Region held various state tournaments throughout the Midwest (Indiana, Michigan and Ohio)

In Michigan, the bracketed event produced plenty of next level competition with the stands dotted by college coaches. After giving you the 17U all tournament teams earlier in the week, here are the top performances from the 16U division.

[player_tooltip player_id='2872591' first='Wycell' last='Davis'] 6-4 2027 Detroit Catholic Central A simply electric performance from the Motor City wing playing with a West Michigan program for the first time. You wouldn't have known it with how he played. Simply put— not much he didn't do. Dropped a 40 piece in quarterfinal action that was up there with one the top performances I have seen in the spring. Could have maybe shot the three a little better. However that's like saying a rapper should sing more. When you attack and finish at the rim like Davis, why bother. That's not to say he can't shoot. Rose up nicely in the mid range. Easily getting above defenders and showing advanced hang time. Accordingly is the rare “in air” playmaker who can wait for players to leak open. Despite a lean frame is string finisher at the rim. Lost count of the dunks. Playing with a Puma that appears to run mostly out of state. Last year ran with Phenom United team out Ohio. I believe this has contributed to him being criminally underrated at the this point. That could change quickly. The talent is there to play with anyone.

[player_tooltip player_id='2757574' first='Emmanuel' last='Cooley'] 5-11 2028 Grand Blanc Very impressive weekend for the Flint area guard. Basically matched Davis (see above) in the championship game before an untimely halftime ending. Has a well rounded floor game already. Seemed to take his game up a notch after one of [program_tooltip program_id='2075759' first='Oakland' last='Elite']'s top scorers only participated on Friday. Seamlessly shifted from distribution mode to more of a scoring role. Extremely quick first step allowed him to get to the rim at will. Not an above the finisher (yet) Thar being said, is a crafty and efficient finisher despite his sub 6-foot frame. Part of a strong Grand Blanc contingent on the weekend. Did this while playing up an age group. Huge upside with this prospect.

[player_tooltip player_id='2141002' first='Jay' last='Watson'] 5-11 2027 Holland West Ottawa Doesn't matter the level or season. Every championship team needs a point guard. Watson did that for Highland Premier for three solid days straight. Doesn't have the explosion or speed of Cooley (not too many do) However, he has the great equalizer in basketball. Extremely deep range from the perimeter. Hit five straight deep threes in a Friday night victory. Despite size, has a smooth and effortless release with little wasted motion. He is by no means a slow basketball player. Has more than enough speed to blow by defenders if you have to play up on him. Did it often this weekend. Is more than just a shooter. Willing passer, especially off the live dribble. Part of a West Ottawa program that is extremely deep in underclassmen talent.

[player_tooltip player_id='2404840' first='Logan' last='Morrish'] 6-4 2027 Hartland Morrish is completely different from the other players on the first team. A physically imposing combo forward who had good weekend for an Inspire U squad that advanced to the semifinal round. Nothing too flashy, but a workmanlike and efficient offensive performer. Averaged double figures on the weekend. Scores in a wide variety of ways. Is also patient and plays within the offense. Even if he is done growing, which I'm not convinced he is. I could see him playing the four at a small college. As his long arms help him play taller than his listed height. If he adds a few more inches and a more consistent outside shot, could also become a plus sized wing.

[player_tooltip player_id='2140476' first='Cameron' last='Crowder'] 6-1 2027 Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern Full disclosure, I wasn't able to get a picture of Crowder this weekend. He was as elusive off the court as he was on it. If let your eyes travel up to the graphic at the top of the page. That is Crowder as he was beginning to enter school. He was probably about 5-9 then. He doesn't look like that anymore. Has filled out physically and stands just north of six foot. While maintaining the lead guard skills I saw as a rising eight grader. Was a mid range maestro all weekend for West Michigan Premier. Showed a a confident release from that much forgotten area of the court. A fundamentally sound player who is once again improving physically as he approaches upper class status.

Second Team

[player_tooltip player_id='2639284' first='Kari' last='Ouwinga'] 6-5 2027 Ferndale Tough cut from first team. Like Davis, a one off player who normally runs the [program_tooltip program_id='2077017' first='Grand' last='Rapids Storm']. Didn't produce the level of “pop” plays that Davis did. But was consistent all weekend. Played inside and out. Just as good out on the perimeter as he was on the block. Showed easy elevation to the rim. Like his teammates, accumulated dunks throughout the weekend. Good passer, especially out of the high post. Next up from a strong basketball lineage. His brother just wrapped up his freshman year at Toledo.

[player_tooltip player_id='2140526' first='Quincy' last='Brown'] 5-11 2027 Hastings Lead guard put together a strong weekend for the [program_tooltip program_id='2077033' first='West' last='Michigan Lakers'] Has some quickness and natural scoring. Put up 15 points in opening and closing contests of the weekend. Looks like an underclassmen and still has some growing to do. If that development comes. This could be a late blooming backcourt prospect. Feels like a while since I have heard of someone from the once dominant Saxon program (if they are still called that) Brown and some other young prospects I have caught recently could change that.

[player_tooltip player_id='2875191' first='Donny' last='Shaw'] 6-0 2027 St Clair Shaw had a strong weekend for Port Huron area Ballers Elite. Stood out in both the first and nearly the last games I saw on the weekend. Steady ball handler who was difficult to turnover. Highly competitive, especially on the defensive end. Could relieve some ball handling duties from seniors [player_tooltip player_id='1588191' first='Braylon' last='Frantz'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2270813' first='Evan' last='Trudeau'] Could give the Saints a nice trio to build with for next season.

[player_tooltip player_id='2776445' first='Jake' last='Bixby'] 6-0 2027 Traverse City St Francis Northern Michigan's HB Elite program had nice weekend on the other side of the bracket. A balanced group that was led by Bixby on Sunday. Putting up 26 points in a closing victory over the [program_tooltip program_id='2075648' first='Michigan' last='Goonies'] (see below) A “jack off all trades” type with a physical frame. It's been a little bit of rebuild for a St Francis squad that appeared in a Division III state championship two years ago. Bixby could be a part of a young group that finishes off that rebuild in the upcoming year.

[player_tooltip player_id='2535764' first='Aiden' last='Gillich'] 6-0 2027 Utica Ford Suburban Detroit guard had a nice weekend for a [program_tooltip program_id='2075648' first='Michigan' last='Goonies'] squad that went 2-2 on the weekend. Not the flashiest prospect, but gets the job done. Put up 24 points in a narrow close loss to HB Elite. Good shooter who hit five threes in that contest. Beyond the scoring touch. Is a good ball handler and passer who can play the point.
