The second day of the NHR State tournament in Minnesota tipped off bright and early at 8 am, but these guys showed up wide awake and ready to hoop. These were my top scorers during Saturday mornings session of 16U action.

Giebel scored from all three levels when he played, but really found success in the paint and mid-range area the most. It is also evident that Giebel understands which shots are good shots for him, as he doesn't force anything. Another way he got open and found his shots was through cutting. The defense was playing up on the passing lanes and Giebel took advantage with some very timely back cuts.

Finishing the basketball near the hoop is the main thing that separates Depoint from the rest. At 16U, one of the biggest things is whether or not you can finish, and Depoint can. Whether it was off a rebound with a defender on his back or off the dribble, he knew his spots and how to get to them. What can elevate his game is being even more comfortable taking outside shots, drawing the defenders further to the perimeter. Doing this would give him more space to go to work driving to the hoop.

Jain, someone who exploded onto the scene for Holy Angels this past year, is a very impressive scorer and showed that Saturday morning. He took a few minutes to feel everything out, but quickly found a rhythm offensively. With his teammate Ike Depoint getting good looks and taking a lot of attention early, Jain was able to get plenty of open looks on the outside shooting. With the defense stepping up on him, he showcased his ability to drive and finish on both sides of the rim.

Being one of the smallest guys on the court, Lewis uses his speed and quickness to shot create. His first and second step were lethal with slower defenders on him, and getting into the paint wasn't an issue for him. His versatility at the hoop was essential to his success as well. His ability to get all the way to the basket and lay it in or stop on a dime and float it in made his game unpredictable. A pick and roll with one of the bigger guys on his team is hard to stop knowing all the different options he has off of it.

Playing two games before noon is tough on the legs, but Anderson looked even fresher in the second game. Rather than looking worn down or tired, he continuously penetrated the paint, getting good looks or drawing fouls. In a game that had his team down by 15, Anderson was keeping them in it until the last minute. When getting pressed, he did a good job getting to the middle and attacking the basket while also keeping his options available to kick it outside.
