Davion Thompson Wins 2025 PHI Player of the Year
It was a tough call for Player of the Year. There were several deserving candidates, but we eventually came to a consensus. Congratulations to Bolingbrook sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2323624' first='Davion' last='Thompson'] on winning the 2025 Prep Hoops Illinois Player of the Year Award!
The criteria for winning this award is being a top player on a winning team. Being a player that if you took that player off the team there would be a significant drop off in that team's performance. Coming up with key performances in big games and being consistently their team's best player throughout the year while leading their team to a stellar season.
Thompson did just that going for 24 points and 5 rebounds per game while leading Bolingbrook to a 28-5 record including a perfect 15-0 in conference play. The biggest thing was just the consistency game in and game out that we saw from Thompson throughout the season on the big stage. As you will see below we covered 8 of his games this season with everyone being against a team that was ranked during the season and most of them made it to sectional action.
In this story we usually dive into their career from the beginning along with their recruitment. Since this is the first time ever a non-senior has won the award we are just going to give you a breakdown of each game we saw him this year with the evaluations from myself and Steve Parham.
Chicago Elite Classic vs Kankakee (54-50 W)
Thompson is among the premier prospects regardless of class in the state. He has moments of brilliance taking over for the Raiders in their win against Kankakee. Slick ball handler that was slippery through traffic slithering through defenders while making tough conversions at the rack. Such an excellent ball handler that can win with straight line takes, change gears, and finish with craftiness in the paint. Got to the line at a high rate, rebounded well, and we were impressed with his passing in this one. Impressive stat line of 22 points (8-13 FG), 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Tosh Quarters vs Lake Forest (59-49 W)
Class of 2027 sensational guard [player_tooltip player_id='2323624' first='Davion' last='Thompson'] is a complete show! He was great playing with the rock in his hands getting euro steps, spinning layups, and changing gears with ease. Banged in multiple deep threes and his passing was on point as well setting up his teammates inside and out. He had 22 points (7-17 FG), 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.
Tosh Semis vs Metamora (61-47 W)
Sophomore superstar [player_tooltip player_id='2323624' first='Davion' last='Thompson'] was held in check in the first half but scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half leading his team to the victory. He did it with his crafty game off the bounce as his tight handles allowed him to get in the lane for layups and short jumpers. Posted up and used shot fakes to get in the mid-range. When he needed it the three ball was there as he poured in a couple deep ones to close the night. The passing feel was on display as well with his 6 assists and active hands defensively snatching 3 steals.
Tosh Title vs Fenwick (54-48 W)
Thompson is one of the premier prospects in the state regardless of class. He was fighting through sickness for a second straight game, but that didn't matter as he came up big again including banging in several very deep threes. His handles were on point as well with hesi moves to set up pull ups, getting in the lane for soft touch finish, and he had his euro step game going as always. The high-major sophomore had 17 points.
Steve Pappas Shootout vs De La Salle (68-48 W)
Maybe the best performances of the whole event. Davion put on a shooting clinic in the first game of the day. He played so calmly and poised throughout the game. Hit shots from deep range and up on the line. At times I was surprised at how the Meteors were covering him because he walked into wide-open shots a couple of possessions. Thompson was more than just a shooter as he drove to the bucket and scored a couple of easy ones as well. In the end he finished with 8 threes and 34 points in the win.
MLK Weekend vs Benet (64-53 W)
Davion hit some big momentum shots in the third and fourth quarter to give Bolingbrook the lead. Ultimately Thompson would go on to score 19 points in the second half while also limiting Fagbemi to just 2 points. Bolingbrook with another big win over a top-10 opponent with Thompson scoring 22 points in the win.
When Sides Collide vs Warren (82-71 L)
The matchup vs Davis was must see TV. Davion is special with his handle and creativity with the ball. He displayed good footwork and shot selection in a back-and-forth contest. He is good with body control when playing off two feet. Something that's stressed a lot in college. Thompson led with 20 for the Raiders.
Bank of O'Fallon vs Vashon (64-56 L)
Thompson carried his team throughout their game against Vashon. Started off with a pair of bombs from deep showing off his deep range. Then went to work off the dribble where he won consistently with drives as he set his finishing moves up with crosses and spins getting in the lane for scores. Mixed in floaters, and-1s, and coast to coast takes for conversions at the rim en route to 24 points.
Once again congratulations to Davion on winning the 2025 Prep Hoops Illinois Player of the Year Award!
