I'm in Rochester for reasons unrelated to high school basketball but while here why not check out the highest rated team in 4A Section 1 versus their cross town rival Rochester Mayo.

Rochester John Marshall is 20-3, and in February, they've not lost, 5 wins in a row after they won 11 in a row. Their lost in December was to Anoka who is ranked currently #13 in QRF in 4A and they lost to #2 ranked 3A Mankato East January 31st.

Rochester Mayo is 17-7 and are 8-2 over their last 10. Lost to 3A #5 ranked Orono, and Mayo also lost to Mankato East February 14th 82-75 in a more competitive scoring result versus John Marshall who got blown out by East 74-44.

The game was close for nearly the entire first half, back and forth, never seemed like any team had an advantage. Mayo played zone the entire game, and John Marshall was patient, taking much that was given which happened to be open 3-pointers which Angok Kucna and [player_tooltip player_id='2422068' first='Brayson' last='Sawyer'] were knocking down.

[player_tooltip player_id='2417626' first='Will' last='Gyarmaty'] led Mayo in the first half with 15 points and a big dunk by [player_tooltip player_id='1560815' first='Logan' last='Shimek'] with 12 seconds left in the half looked like Mayo would be up 39-35 if John Marshall didn't answer. Unfortunately for John Marshall they threw the ball crosscourt and Gyarmaty made a play on the ball and scored with [player_tooltip player_id='1450098' first='Eli' last='Ladu'] all over him at the rim and Mayo had their largest lead of the game 41-35.

Mayo controlled most of the 2nd half by wearing down John Marshall with their zone. Looks weren't nearly as open, the Rockets weren't making as many, and they weren't as patient as they started the game. The [program_tooltip program_id='2075852' first='Spartans' last=''] behind Gyarmaty who would finish the game with 29 points led the entire 2nd half and held off a middle 2nd half run when the game was at 63-61.

John Marshall got a strong game from Kucha and Sawyer who scored 22 points and 19 points respectively while fellow 2025 senior [player_tooltip player_id='1450098' first='Eli' last='Ladu'] scored 15 points.

MVP of Game:

[player_tooltip player_id='2417626' first='Will' last='Gyarmaty'], the 2026 six-foot-four-inch wing came into the game averaging 16 points per game. He scored 29, from 3 and inside, and he showed toughness and good court awareness.

[player_tooltip player_id='1560815' first='Logan' last='Shimek'], a 2026 junior forward, was tough down the stretch by making big shots.

Prospect to Watch

[player_tooltip player_id='2133222' first='Elliot' last='Myszkowski'] - The 2027 guard was very steady coming off the bench handling the ball and any pressure. I'm close to saying he was excellent. Myszkowski had a couple dribble moves in the first half that put defenders on skates as well.

2025 Senior to Key Eye On

[player_tooltip player_id='2422069' first='Angok' last='Kucha'], a six-foot-eight-inch 2025 wing could be a nice player somewhere in college. He has a lot of what you look for in a prospect, size, length, and 3-pointer shooting ability.
