Marquette travelled to Kingsford last night to stake their claim as the outright conference champions of the Great Northern Conference. However, Coach Ben Olsen and the Flivvers had a few things to say about it. A share of the GNC for the Flivvers, momentum heading into the tournament, and a 100-win milestone for Coach Olsen. Some in-game evaluations of some players who helped Kingsford take down the Sentinels.

One of the many talented guards on this squad. Hit a nice corner three at 3:50 in the 1st that sparked a 13-0 run to finish the quarter, in which Kingsford held a 21-7 lead. A lead that Marquette was never able to recover from. He put up 11 points and had quite a few key steals. He's a three-sport athlete who excels in not only basketball but football and baseball. The latter has earned him a college-level roster spot on the UW-Plateville baseball team. Also of note, Gavin carries an amazing GPA and has been selected as a finalist for the MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Award.

I consistently like the way this young man plays the game. Put in 8 and had an exceptional night from the charity stripe. Typically likes the corner three and shoots it with a high percentage. While Sleik was out a few weeks with an injury, Owen had to move up the depth chart to the PF position and was able to get the job done nicely.

Morgan had an amazing game for the Flivvers. He dumped in 15 against one of the best defenders in the UP. Like how aggressive he was around the rim. Able to draw a lot of contact and made it to the FT line for 13 attempts. He is a game-changer in a very electric lineup. Last year the Flivvers were bumped in the D2 quarter-final by a good Flint Powers Catholic. A quarter-final rematch between these two powerhouses would not be a terrible assumption.

Correction on this one: FPC would now come down through district 51, which is QF7. Could be a possible semi-final match up. Good catch, JG.

Gavin was able to have himself another exceptional game. Shot well from the floor and was able to attack the basket well. This young man is a top candidate for division 1-3 Player of the Year as well as Mr. UP Basketball. Put up 26 last night, and shot 4 for 4 from the free-throw line. Kingsford will play the winner of the Gladstone/Escanaba game next week in a district semi-final game and is a heavy favorite for District 33 and Regional 10 in D2

Kingsford seemed well prepared for this one and came out on fire. They pestered the Marquette guards and racked up quite a few steals in the first half. Marquette was able to make a few adjustments in the second half, but could never make up ground from being down in the first. Make no mistake though, this Marquette team is a very solid basketball team and despite an off night, they'll be ready to ball next week.

Buettner and the Michigan Tech Huskies inked a dandy with this one. Despite Marquette taking an L last night, Jacob still showed up and had an excellent game. I noticed Jacob is starting to become a lot more comfortable helping bring the ball up the floor and is confidently shooting from 10+ feet out. A characteristic that should transition well to the next level. His work ethic, paired with his frame, often reminds me of LSSU's Hunter Soper.

Connor is a 2026 who has been on the Sentinals starting lineup most of the year. He is a solid wing who has many facets to his game. Notably like his defense. His long wing span helps him clog up passing lanes and helps the Marquette defense rack up steals. Marquette is a #1 seed in District 1 and will face the winner of the Petoskey/Gaylord game. If they make the district final, it should be a nice game against either TC Central or TC West.
