IHSAA Rankings Release – 2/3

Quantae Alexander and Prairie are into the 4A rankings at #10

The fourth set of boys basketball rankings from the Iowa High School Athletic Association were released this morning. With the IHSAA rankings becoming the go-to ranking around the state, the Prep Hoops Iowa poll is now done for the year. That said, I serve on the Class 2A rankings committee, and will release an article each week taking a quick look at the rankings and perhaps making a few notes where I disagree with what the other committees have put together. Substate brackets for Class 1A and 2A will be released a week from today, February 10, with Class 3A and 4A to come the following Monday.

Class 1A

1. (1) Marquette Catholic (18-0)
2. (2) Madrid (17-0)
3. (3) MMCRU (16-2)
4. (4) Woodbine (16-1)
5. (5) ACGC (15-1)
6. (7) St. Mary’s, Remsen (14-3)
7. (8) St. Edmond (15-2)
8. (6) Gladbrook-Reinbeck (14-3)

10. (NR) North Linn (16-2)

Thoughts: Not much change in 1A, with only North Linn re-entering this week at #10. Marquette Catholic and Madrid appear to be on a collision course for Championship Friday. Class 1A has been pretty straight forward so far this season, and the postseason should be a lot of fun.

Class 2A

2. (2) Kuemper Catholic (18-1)
3. (4) Unity Christian (14-3)
4. (3) West Lyon (14-3)
5. (5) Grundy Center (16-0)
6. (6) Grand View Christian (17-1)
7. (8) Cascade (15-2)
8. (7) Treynor (14-3)
9. (NR) Aplington-Parkersburg (15-1)
10. (10) West Burlington (16-2)

Thoughts: A few notable changes in Class 2A, with Unity Christian and West Lyon flipping following the former’s notable win over MOC-Floyd Valley. After Cascade got revenge on Monticello, the same thing happened with the Cougars and Treynor. Aplington-Parkersburg enters the rankings following an impressive week that included a pair of 71-56 wins over Jesup and Gladbrook-Reinbeck, a ranked 1A team. The Falcons’ only loss is to #5 Grundy Center.

Class 3A

5. (3) MOC-Floyd Valley (13-3)

Thoughts: Actually a surprisingly calm week in Class 3A, usually the class of chaos. You could maybe nitpick on a spot or two (I’d probably have Knoxville a little lower based on SOS), but these ten appear to be pretty solid right now.

Class 4A

4. (4) Linn-Mar (13-2)
5. (5) Waukee Northwest (13-3)

Thoughts: Prairie now has one of the most impressive resume in the state, holding wins over #1 Cedar Falls, #3 Kennedy, and 3A #2 Decorah. The Cedar Falls win from last week gets them into the rankings for the first time this season. CBAL jumps over Waukee following the head-to-head win on Saturday. Things look pretty right here as well.
