Weekly Rankings Update – Dec. 8
After an eventful opening week, there was some shakeup in the rankings across all four classes. Anyone who has paid attention to Iowa high school basketball over the years should see it as no surprise that the most turmoil comes in Class 3A, which is always a difficult class to rank. Below I detail some of the key movement in each class.
In Class 1A, North Linn (2-0) and Madrid (3-0) maintain the top two spots in the class, but Marquette Catholic (3-0), the defending runner-ups, make a leap from #5 to #3 following a big-time win in Wisconsin Dells over then-4A #10 North Scott. Kee (1-1) falls a few spots from #7 to #9 following their loss to 3A Charles City, with Lake Mills (1-0) and Dunkerton (3-0) each moving up a spot as a result of that loss.
Despite a pair of losses, Western Christian stays at #1 in Class 2A. The Wolfpack’s two losses came to ranked teams in Nebraska’s largest class, a pair of schools from Omaha. If the losses continue to pile up for the defending champs, they’ll fall in subsequent weeks, but for now, they don’t deserve to be punished for those two setbacks. West Lyon (3-0) and West Burlington (3-0) flip spots following an impressive West Lyon win over MOC-Floyd Valley, while Albia (3-0) joins the rankings at #10 following a dominant opening week.
There are four new schools in the rankings in Class 3A – #5 Wahlert Catholic (2-0), #7 Storm Lake (2-0), #9 Newton (3-0), and #10 Solon (2-0). Wahlert joins the rankings following their big win over defending champion Assumption in Davenport, and the Knights (0-1) fall to #8 as a result of the loss. Ballard (2-0) takes over the top spot in the class, followed by Clear Lake (2-0), ADM (2-0), and Xavier (2-0).
Things largely remain the same in Class 4A, with the top four holding serve, followed by a flip between Kennedy (1-0) and Iowa City West (2-0) at #5 and #6, respectively. Johnston (2-0) enters at #10 following the North Scott loss.
