USE CODE “baxley30” FOR 30% THE FIRST PURCHASE FOR ANY SUBSCRIPTION

It's June! The 2024 Scholastic Period has returned to High School Basketball in the State of South Carolina. I was at Byrnes High School in Duncan, South Carolina on Wednesday for one of the month's first events. Eight of the State's Top Programs were off in attendance including two that made it to a State Championship Game in the 2023-24 Season. June is an exciting time because we often get to see multiple teams in one gym displaying returning veterans, developed talent, and new faces. Check out Part 2 of my Biggest Standouts from the Byrnes Summer Shootout:

[player_tooltip player_id='1474820' first='Broderick' last='Anderson'] showed two different sides of his game on Wednesday at the Byrnes Summer Shootout and was the Raiders' most consistent player in the event. In Game 1 against Dorman, he displayed his continued jump-shot improvement knocking down an early three and getting fouled on another to go with multiple elbow-area shots, finishing with 16 total points. In Game 2 against Riverside, Anderson was much more of an interior presence, hauling in 7 rebounds including turning a couple of those into second-chance points. However, in that second game, Broderick hit the most important shot of the contest from behind the arc - a go-ahead three with under a minute left to play.

Sumpter was business as usual for Keenan in Duncan but didn't play much down the stretch of the final game as his Coaches wanted to see what the squad looked like without their most talented player. Brian has special length and has become an exciting all-around prospect. One wrinkle the Raiders did to utilize that length was playing him on-ball defensively, starting him near the top of the key and switching all hand-offs to keep him effective. When he wasn't around the perimeter, he was affecting shots near the basket and had 4 total blocks between 2 Games.

I mean it as a full compliment when I saw Colt was awesome yet still was not at his best at the Byrnes Summer Shootout Wednesday. He was extremely efficient in the first half of the Rebels' first matchup with Hillcrest, shooting 6-6 from three and racking up 5 assists as they jumped up to a large lead. Fowler has a unique blend of blow-by speed, vision, and knockdown perimeter shooting. What he did struggle with was turnovers. At times it felt like he was playing too fast and other times there was some rust that came from not playing with these guys in a few months. Neither are major concerns, they just show that Fowler has the ceiling to be even better than where he sits as one of the best PGs in the State.

Rector was a pleasant surprise for the home team yesterday. He was very aggressive in the paint on both sides of the floor playing as the 4 for the Rebels. Jeremiah plays taller than his listed size due to his strength, work rate, and knack for being in the right position on the boards. He seeks contact with the ball in his hands and has a solid free throw stroke if he can't finish through it. Between Byrnes' two games, Jeremiah went for 8 Points and 6 Rebounds against Hillcrest and 8 Points and 5 Rebounds against Sumter.

Houston was a bright spot for the Rams in their first live scrimmage of the month. He is going to be the vocal leader on the floor and in the locker room for this squad, while also seeing an increase in playmaking responsibility due to some departures. Long showed some nice flashes making plays when run off the three-point line, getting to his floater, or kicking out to corner shooters. He was also the architect of some well-run inbound sets, particularly from the baseline which resulted in 2 of his 3 assists in Game 1. Houston also worked hard on the boards and earned some extra possessions on the offensive end for his squad.

Brown had a solid game for the Gamecocks in a loss to the host. He has more of a responsibility to the all-around game for Sumter than he does with his AAU Squad, particularly with rebounding and creating his own scoring opportunities. When the primary scoring option, BJ particularly relies on the jump stop, using his strength and athleticism to get through multiple bodies and rise up over defenders or use his pivot foot to find a better option. In the the matchup with Byrnes, BJ went for 21 Points displaying his ability to score from the three levels of the floor.
