I missed out on seeing Isaac at the Battle at the Lakes in May as he was out with an injury, but he was healthy over the weekend and contributed in a big way in the win over DeLaSalle. Isaac excels as both a scorer and facilitator, and is capable of taking a game over in either way depending on what his team needs. He has a quick release on his shot, and is capable of creating that little bit of space to get it off on the perimeter. Olmstead connected on a handful of jumpers, but was perhaps at his best getting into the lane and setting up his teammates with good looks. He has excellent vision and is so creative in finding ways to get the ball to the open man.
Jaleel had a big game helping lead BSM past Byron. He continues to grow as a shooter, and knocked down a handful of threes as well as a couple of mid-range jumpers in the game I watched. He’s so quick getting downhill that defenders often sag off to prevent the drive, which allows him to stop and elevate for a 15 footer. Plays with a bit of flair and it showed in some of the no-look assists he was dishing out in the lane. Really explosive and shifty athlete with a good wingspan as a guard. When his jumper is falling, there aren’t many guards in the state who can hang with him.
Highlights
Arsee had a productive game off the bench in a win over Faribault. Johnson lost some important guards from last season’s team, and Arsee will be one of the players competing for those minutes. At 6’2 he has solid positional size, and was finding success getting to the basket. Showed good body control to go up balanced and finish at a high rate in traffic. Also came up with a couple of turnovers as Johnson was pressuring the length of the floor for just about the entire game.
Carson shot the lights out from beyond the arc in a big win over Waseca. Playing alongside a pair of 6’7+ bigs, the defense was often forced to collapse on them, leaving Carson to find pockets of space on the perimeter to catch and shoot. Defenders just didn’t seem to learn as Carson kept on finding open looks from deep and putting three points on the board. Also had an impressive chase-down block in transition. Averaged 13.7 ppg last season as a sophomore.
Ryan has to be in consideration for the best shot blocker in Minnesota. Against St. Paul Johnson he got a hand on six shots, and was coming up with those blocks in a number of ways. If his man tried backing him down, Ryan fought to hold his ground and wall up to get a piece of the ball. Also showed the mobility to move his feet at 6’9 to get into position and elevate for a block. Still a raw prospect on the offensive end, but is so quick off the floor and threw down an alley-oop dunk and a putback dunk in the game I watched.
Highlights
There aren’t many guys in the state who can just go out and get a bucket like Mitchell can. It seems like since his very first high school game, he’s gone out with the mentality that no one on the floor can guard him, and in a lot of cases that ends up being true. In a win over Minnetonka he made things look effortless as he pulled up for deep threes, picked up steals for easy transition buckets, and showcased impressive change of speed to get to the rim after coming off screens. CDH played with a lot of intensity on the defensive end, and with that Joseph was pressuring the ball hard and forcing a lot of errors from opposing guards.
Highlights
Ian was in full control of the paint against Waseca. With a big size advantage, Ian was demanding the ball on the block, and just bullying his way to the rim to finish. In a crowded lane he did a nice job of playing off of two feet, and gathering his balance to finish rather than just forcing the ball up because he had a height advantage. Ran the floor hard in transition, and it paid off in the second half as he threw down an alley-oop dunk off the backboard. Pulled in rebounds in bulk and was securing possession with two hands before finding one of his guards.
