Lyons really popped in a matchup with Thrill, getting downhill with ease and finishing with authority above the rim. He sets up his drives well with low to fast dribble combos that throw off his defender’s timing and shifts the defense where he wants them to go. The ability to get paint touches to either score or distribute will be valuable for a Clinton Grace team graduating most of their depth this season.
Junior Mancho
Junior Mancho
We’ve written about Mancho and his potential before, but the safety net of a big that can protect the rim, rebound the ball at a high level, and score around the basket is so valuable for this Thrill team that has a ton of talent on the perimeter. What he likes in scoring polish around the basket and advanced footwork, he makes up for in raw effort and physicality. The shooting touch has improved from the line pretty drastically over his first year of HS basketball, so I anticipate him extending his scoring touch to the midrange over the next 18 months.
Lunn is such a dynamic downhill driver, overpowering his defender on his way to some big finishes at the rim. He was inserted into the game about 5 mins in and Thrill went on a 17-3 run to come back from down double digits to take the lead. Defensively he is in gaps, forces dribble pick-ups, and is a great weakside shot-blocker from the guard spot. As the range on his jumper continues to expand, I expect him to become a top-25 talent in his class.
Kamsi Awaka
Kamsi Awaka
Awaka played with such force, energy, and enthusiasm at b0th ends of the floor. Not afraid to do the dirty work– he hits the glass hard, sets great screens, finishes his opportunities around the rim, slides on the perimeter to force dribble pick-ups on shows before getting back to his man– he knows his role and plays within himself, a rarity in a prospect this young.
Kareem Smith-Bey
Kareem Smith-Bey
A name that the DMV will soon know when he steps onto the floor at St. John’s, he impressed playing up with a good New World 15u squad this weekend. Smith-Bey is an aggressive, athletic wing that plays a winning brand of basketball at both ends of the court. His length, size, and athleticism already allow him to switch 1-3 while causing havoc on or off the ball. Offensively, his downhill driving puts pressure on the help defenders to be in position and cut off his path without fouling. There’s a lot to love with this young prospect with a bright future.
One of my favorite players to watch, Sutton is an incredible athlete that can get by virtually any defender put in front of him. The finishing bag around the basket has continued to improve with a series of finesse finishes. Sutton has mastered the dribble pickup on drives, pivot, and fadeaway jumper in the paint to finish over taller defenders. Still want to see him mix in more drives and cross-court skips with his scoring to improve the shot selection at times. Has improved as an on-ball defender this year that plays more disciplined and stays out of foul trouble while still gambling for the steal in more high-probability opportunities. Interested to see how he mixes in with a stacked Team Loaded 16u group next week.
Proctor’s game is REALLY starting to come together as a versatile wing prospect that can do a little bit of everything. The perimeter shooting is the selling point but he has really improved his body, sharpening up his body composition while adding muscle and retaining the movement skills to slide with guards on the perimeter. Had several showtime finishes above the rim but is also beginning to process the game better with better and quicker passing reads from the wing.
