In this article we will break down a few freshmen who made an impact in the CHSAA in NYC this season. The whole group of these guys will all be headed to D1 programs and should be the new faces of the league.
Callahan not only was a starter for Iona Prep this season he was one of their primary scoring options. He finished third in scoring, played the top of zone defensively, created a bunch of steals and always seemed to be around the ball for rebounds. His finishing ability is terrific, he’s very competitive, extremely coachable an makes his teammates better around him. We believe he should become a superstar this offseason on the AAU circuit and when he returns for his sophomore campaign we know he will have his eyes set on an ALL CHSAA spot.
While Callahan was awesome this year we aren’t sure any prospect we evaluated impressed us more than point guard Anderson Diaz Anderson Diaz 6’0″ | CG St Rays | 2027 NY . He respectfully destroyed Taahad Pettiford at the Made Hoops event, he diced up D1 guards all season, his basketball IQ is off the charts and the way he finishes around the rim is so creative. The fact he is a lefty automatically reminds me of Kenny Anderson but his game is even more unique especially at such a young level. Diaz is going to be a megastar and honestly could the number 1 player in all of 2027.
The next installment of a Martin at St. Peter’s was a success this season as Talib was tremendous for the Eagles off the bench. He is an elite rebounder for his age, great shot blocker, excellent motor, very active and not afraid to move people around. Martin gained crucial experience with the big boys, he got comfortable in their system and was coming alive in the playoffs when they ultimately fell short. We love the promise he shows, he brings a lot of value, he is extremely versatile with his length plus we believe he is just scratching the surface of his potential.
The Iona Prep boy’s team is a program certainly on the rise especially with the young talent they have on their roster and lower levels. They have completely restocked the rosters at all three levels and besides Callahan Fernandez really impressed us. He is a smooth off guard who can make threes, attack the basket, create for others and draw fouls. We noticed his defense improved throughout the year, he was more connected to the group, he was terrific at his role and showed us he belonged. His upside and potential ever meet the Gaels could have something seriously brewing.
Highlights
The Stepinac Crusaders dominated the CHSAA this season and were bale to capture back to back League Titles. They had one of the best rosters not only in New York but the entire country in our opinion. While most of the attention goes to their Seniors and a McDonald All American Rivera did an wonderful job in his limited opportunities this season. He still was effective whether it was scoring, rebounding. spacing the floor or trying to get shots for others. We love his skillset, athleticism, toughness and potential. Rivera has chance to be a special name in 2027 and this offseason expect him to really take off as he looks to prove he could potentially do more next season.
We hope you understand we could have put several talented freshmen for this last spot because the league is getting younger so fast. The reason we went with Moran is because why he may not have the flash he is a prospect we know is going to have a big year next season. He will be expected to take care of the ball, help run the offense, make shots when called on and compete defensively on every possession. His coaching staff will continue to push Moran to the next level and we can’t wait to see what he has in store for his second varsity season.
