Prep Hoops takes a look at some of the guards who took advantage of the big stage on it’s first day. Read on for Guard Standouts from Day 1.
Daniel got stronger as the game went on, finishing with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 8 assists. The Catawba commit found a way to stay productive when his shot wasn’t falling early, and then helped lead a comeback effort that ultimately fell short.
A springy combo guard at 6-foot-2, Brown’s ability to get to the lane and draw contact on his drives and either finish or draw fouls is high level. On top of that he can create off the dribble and did a good job of feeding shooters as well as his big men.
Cobb looks like a potential steal for Columbia. The talented floor general went for 27 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists in a short-handed Homewood-Flossmoor first round loss. A craft and shifty guard who can really shoot it and plays hard, Cobb should have an impact in the coming years in Harlem.
Highlights
There’s nothing overly flashy to Chotikovanic’s game, but he was hyper-efficient in their win against HF. The 6-foot-3 combo guard was in total control, scoring 22 points while going 10/11 from 2. He also did a great job setting his teammates up and rebounding as well. He should be a priority for small colleges at the very least.
Highlights
The Purdue commit ran the offense well, finishing with 14 points and 10 assists in a first round victory. A tough two-way guard who keeps the ball moving and reads the floor well, he should find his way to minutes in West Lafayette sooner rather than later.
Davis was highly impressive in powering his team to a first round victory over Camden (NJ)- finishing with 19 points while shooting 7-of-9 from the field. He was able to create space off the dribble and either pulled up in the mid-range or finished at the rim. Crafty and skilled with a good IQ and motoe, Davis is a name to monitor moving forward.
With plenty talent along the wings, junior lead guard Jalen Reece spread the ball around and made sure all of his teammates got touches with an opportunity to score. While he only finished with 3 assists, he made a number of passes that ultimately led to a easy basket. He’s extremely quick and sees the floor well while remaining a threat to score himself.
After De-committing from Siena following a coaching change, Sanders returns to being one of the best available players left in 2024 from NYC. A 6-foot-3 guard who wants to play with the ball in his hands and can create off the dribble, Sanders will bring leadership, toughness, and slashing ability to whatever college program he ultimately lands at.
The recent St. Thomas (FL) commit put up 15 points on seven shots, going perfect from beyond the arc and 7-of-9 overall. He also did a good job of getting his teammates involved, dishing out 5 assists as well.
Houston fans should be thrilled about bringing Miller into the program next season. A guard who is wired to score, shoots it well, and plays hard defensively, Miller looks primed to thrive in the Cougars system. He finished with 26 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists in a defeat to Columbus (FL).
