Billings is starting to put together some impressive performances for New Hanover at just the right time, going for 20/10 in the first round and then 20 to lead all scorers in a tight win over Knightdale in the second round. He’s a physical, high motor forward that has been known to just outwork and out-tough guys on the offensive end, but is really showing major growth in his shot creation and scoring abilities. Going to be a key part of whether NHHS can go undefeated and a name to watch in next year’s class.
Helms senior season may be finished with a second round loss to Garner, but he was the guy his team relied on to make plays offensively down the stretch of both state tournament games. He had 19 in a first round win over Pinecrest, then 24 in the aforementioned loss to Garner. He’s great at getting to his spots on the perimeter, and also knows how to drive the ball in order to initiate contact and get trips to the free throw line. Potential college level prospect that coaches should take a look at.
Yancey Thomason

Thomason is playing his best basketball at the right time in the season, scoring 21 points in a tight one over Cox Mill, then 20 more in a win over Watauga. He’s become more confident scoring the ball over the course of the season, showing why he was a preseason 4A Southwestern all conference pick from our staff here at PH. He’ll need to have another big game that has him shooting the deep ball well when his group travels to Myers Park on Tuesday.
Younger is leading 3 seed Weddington to two good wins so far in playoff play ahead of a titanic matchup with Chambers Tuesday night. He had 28 points in a first round win over East Meck, and 18 in a slugfest against Butler Friday night. He’s super physical around the rim, but also has the ability to play intense defense on the other end and guard multiple positions, blocking shots and swiping loose balls up from the floor. They’ll need him to continue to play great in order to have a deep run.
Goods continues to show why he’s a top unsigned senior in the state and a double double machine, dropping 18 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocks in the first round, then 28 points and 11 rebounds against Davie County in the second round. He’s a premier lob catcher, rim runner and physical post presence that helps protect the glass on both ends of the floor, as well as providing a spark offensively in the post and around the rim as a whole. His matchup with Steinour at Lake Norman tomorrow night will be one of the best big men battles we’ve seen all season in the state.
