Winning co-offensive player of the year and defensive player of the year in the CMAC, nobody impacted the game more on both ends of the floor than Mills. Undersized for what he does on the court, Mills has a motor that NEVER stops and is one of the best athletes in Ohio. For coaches that want to full-court press and get up and down the court, Mills is a perfect fit for those systems. JUCO programs should be making Mills a priority among available Ohio prospects.
Moving from Florida to Ohio, Buchanan had a slow start to his time in Ohio scoring 7 and 13 points in his first two games. Since then, Buchanan is averaging 21.5 PPG and shooting 51% from the floor and 44% from 3-point range. Going over 1,000 points for his career, Buchanan has the natural scoring ability that will translate to the next level. Buchanan has only posted offers from when he was in Florida but has gained interest from Midwest scholarship programs as well. A player to watch in the playoffs, Taft could shake up a wide open SW DII region with their ability to turn teams over with Buchanan and Jay’Quan Bostic Jay’Quan Bostic 6’3″ | SF Cincinnati Taft | 2024 State OH each averaging over 2 steals a game.
The third consecutive CMAC player to be featured in this article, Johnson has a lot of natural talent and ability. Scoring 17 PPG on 53% from the floor shows his scoring talents. A strong wing who can get to the rim, I was hoping Johnson would take a leap as a shooter this season but only making 12 3-pointers shows his work is done in the paint and mid-range area. His frame and size also allows Johnson to be an impact defensive player who can defend 3’s and 4’s If the light flips on for Johnson he could wind up being a steal for whatever program takes a chance on him.
One of the top high academic prospects in the state, Raymond-Smith has over a 4.4 GPA and is receiving interest from high academic programs across the region. After averaging 14 and 8 on one of the top teams in northeast Ohio as a Junior, Raymond-Smith has taken on an even larger offensive role en route to scoring over 1,000 points in his high school career. A high IQ player who is a strong rebounder for his position and scores within the offense, I expect Raymond-Smith to have an easy transition to the college level.
One of the bigger risers as a senior, Taylor continues to show up in big games and provide value as a 3-and-D wing. The lefty has a smooth stroke and plays well off drive and kicks, especially in the corners. Another prospect that should get a ton of JUCO interest due to his size, shooting and defensive upside. I wouldn’t be surprised if Taylor eventually finds himself as a Division I player or at a high-level Division II a couple years from now. Lutheran East is looking to make another state title push and Taylor is a big part of that. He’ll be a riser in our final 2024 rankings update after the state playoffs conclude.
