The visiting Buccaneers held on for a 57-55 victory over CdM to advance another step closer to reaching a state championship game. Below we break down our ten best performers from the game.
Best All-Around: Charlie Hutchison Charlie Hutchison 6'6" | SF Mission Bay | 2024 State CA-S , Mission Bay | Nick Salmon, Corona del Mar
On Hutchison: The 6-foot-7 forward is a true definition of a dribble, pass and shoot wing and had all of those skills on display. Hutchison led all scorers with 19 points, including nine in the fourth quarter, and dished out five assists to go along with five rebounds.
On Salmon: The 6-foot-3 forward is a physical interior guy who might be undersized for his position at the next level but is an effective high school four-man because of his fundamental skill-set. Salmon knows how to use his body to create space, uses the glass to his advantage when finishing and can drive and score out of face-up situations. The senior had 15 points and seven rebounds.
Best Shooters: Gavin Girouard, Mission Bay | Maxwell Scott, Corona del Mar
On Girouard: Girouard was in foul trouble for most of the first half, but he came out aggressive in the third quarter and knocked down two important three-point shots to give the Bucs a much-needed cushion heading into the fourth quarter.
On Scott: The 6-foot-2 freshman has put up a number of impressive scoring displays this season and didn’t disappoint on Tuesday night. Scott scored 18 points, including two three-pointers, and showed off his high IQ shot creation.
Best Rebounders: Clay Grebing, Mission Bay | Jackson Harlan, Corona del Mar
On Grebing: The 6-foot-5 sophomore didn’t have a ton of rebounds but the ones he got were extremely impressive and important. Grebing finished with five boards, all of which he battled against multiple Corona del Mar defenders to secure.
On Harlan: The 6-foot-6 dual-sport athlete – who also plays water polo – was a man amongst boys in the lane Tuesday night. Harlan snatched a game-high 14 rebounds, many of them through traffic, and his energy and effort pursuing missed shots was one of the more impressive revelations of the game.
Best Passers: Charlie Hutchison Charlie Hutchison 6'6" | SF Mission Bay | 2024 State CA-S , Mission Bay | Luke Mirhashemi, Corona del Mar
On Hutchison: While the senior may be listed as a forward on the Mission Bay roster, it seemed like whenever head coach Marshawn Cherry needed a play to be made, Hutchison had the ball in his hands. As mentioned above, Hutchison finished with a team-high five assists on the night but also made simple passes and reads throughout offensive possessions that created open looks for his teammates.
On Mirhashemi: The 6-foot-3 sophomore point guard is more of the game-managing variety of player and his ability to take care of the ball and get into the lane for drive-and-kicks to teammates was much-needed for the Sea Kings to space the floor.
Best Prospects: Caleb Newton Caleb Newton 6'2" | PG Mission Bay | 2026 State CA-S , Mission Bay | Maxwell Scott, Corona del Mar
On Newton: The 6-foot-3 sophomore is a dynamic athlete and finisher around the basket who can also step out and hit open three’s or break a defender down in isolation and create a shot for himself or teammates.
On Scott: As mentioned above, the freshman is a pure shooter off the catch but also showed he can dribble himself into the lane for floaters, pull-up jumpers or crafty finishes around the rim.
