Continue ReadingThe Cadets (18-5,6-3) came into this matchup red-hot, winners of 8 of their last 10 and fighting to put some space between the middle of the pack in the WCAC to nestle in comfortably in 3rd place. The upstart Carroll Lions (16-10, 4-7) came in as winners of 5 of their last 7–and it was a dogfight from the outset. St. John’s used a 10-1 run spurred by Finley Billy in the last 3 mins to close the 1Q with a 21-13 lead, but Carroll cut the halftime lead to 5 behind the scoring of Hassan Dorman Hassan Dorman 6'2" | SG Archbishop Carroll | 2024 State MD and Shaun Murphy Shaun Murphy 6'2" | SG Archbishop Carroll | 2024 State MD . But Carroll mounted a run behind the efforts of Dorman (21p 4r 2s 1a), Murphy (11p 8r 4a 3s) and Landry Barbour Landry Barbour 6'4" | SG Archbishop Carroll | 2024 State MD (12p 6a 3r 2s) to cut the lead to 2 before St. John’s inbounded and ran out the clock to escape with a hard-fought 69-67 road victory.
St. John’s will host Ireton on Friday, while Carroll hosts a big matchup with Gonzaga Friday night, both games being played at 7:30.
Dorman had a great individual game despite some tough individual defense in addition to the doubles/stunts sent his way from SJC help defenders– finishing with 21p 4r 2s 1a on 53% shooting from the field. Dorman showed his ability to score from all 3 levels in addition to the FT line (5/6) in the close loss for Carroll. He always seems to be aware of the time and score before he gets into his move, getting to the rim (and as a result, the FT line) more in the 4Q as his team needed higher-percentage looks at the basket. He uses a deceptive pace and shields the ball well on his drives to the rim, decelerating to pull up at the free throw line or get all the way downhill to the basket depending on what the defense gives him. One of the best available 2024 players in the area.
Newman has dramatically increased his productivity on the ball this season with the departure of Malik Mack and Daquan Davis, growing more and more comfortable as a playmaker off the bounce once the hard contests begin flying after a few made 3s. The junior combo guard finished with a well-rounded 19p 2s 1b 1a 1r stat line, shooting 55% from the floor and 60% from 3. While his handle still needs to prove in order to navigate ball screens a bit more efficiently, Newman is rounding out into a much more complete prospect for the Cadets
Zyion Chase Zyion Chase 6’6″ | PF St. John’s | 2026 State MD plays winning basketball. Narrowly missing out on a 4×5 statline, the workhorse sophomore forward finished with 5p 10r 5a 4b 1s to seal the win for St. John’s. Whenever the Cadets need a big rebound, a bone-crushing screen, a help-side block, or a switch-able forward hedging out on guards on the perimeter– Chase is answering the call. He has improved his foot speed and is getting off the floor for rebounds, blocks and finishes much better this year. As he continues to add in shooting touch outside of the paint and a bit more ball-handling to take advantage of his vision (outlet passes are becoming real high-level), I expect him to become a hot commodity for college coaches because of his ability to make a well-rounded impact.
Geremy Clark Geremy Clark 5’10” | PG St John’s CHS | 2026 State MD has patiently waited his turn at St. John’s behind a slew of upperclassmen contributors last season and a heavy guard rotation still on Military Road this spring. The sophomore point guard sees the floor incredibly well and directed traffic even after getting rid of the ball to create easy looks for his offense. Speaking of his offense, he’s choosing his spots well in the last few weeks to get off clean floaters from the paint and open looks from beyond the arc. Bright future ahead for this high-IQ young guard, he finished with 9p 3a 2r in the home win.
