When it came to the top of the rankings, we thought it was time to try something different. Instead of simply ranking the top four players ourselves, we instead reached out to others for their feedback. We asked 20 coaches – from the high school, club, and college levels (JUCO to D-I) – all familiar with the top players in the state to give us their anonymous feedback on how they would rank in order the top four in terms of college potential. We assembled the results, calculated the average ranks, and here’s how things shook out. While they ended up being the same order they placed in the last rankings update, one thing everyone agreed upon was this fact – it’s really close.
Out of all the coaches polled, the senior from Roosevelt gathered the most first and second place votes and only one coach ranked him fourth. The talented guard was lauded for his offensive ability and most everyone believes he’s set for a great college career at Utah State for a coach in Danny Sprinkle that’s good with his development of guard talent.
Size matters in the college game and especially after proving himself against top competition in the holiday tournaments, Maurer got plenty of love from the coaches with the second-most first place votes. One thing that most agreed was with his collegiate choice of Grand Canyon in terms of fit both on the court in terms of level and off the court personally.
Out of the top four players, Carmichael’s ranking fluctuated the most among the coaches we polled. One thing that was brought up consistently though with the Summit senior was the fact that he can definitely score the basketball and with his size and shooting ability, a Duncan Robinson comparison was even brought forth.
Steppe ended up ranking fourth out of the top players but there was certainly not a slight to his game or production, of which has been spectacular so far this season for Tualatin. The Colorado State commit was praised for his physicality and effort on the court and one coach even likened him to one of this year’s rookie sensations in the NBA, Jaime Jaquez Jr.
