Those players typically go unnoticed but can be the source of real diamonds in the rough. Here are 5 players that have improved their play so far in the 2023-2024 high school season.
Markelle Massenburg | 6-2 | G | 2024 | Franklinton High School
Massenburg is a player that has made a leap this season for Franklinton. He is a guard with great mechanics on his jumper and range out to the 3-point line. If you play him for the shot, he will rip past you and finish at the rim with finesse or power. Plays the game at his pace and never seems to get sped up. He is a versatile guard who can play on the ball and off the ball. He is a player that can play at the next level.
Stephen Howard | 5-10 | G | 2024 | Nash Central High School
Howard is another player who has taken his game up a notch this season for Nash Central High School. His average has gone from 10.4 ppg as a junior to 17.4 ppg as a senior. He is a player that is at his best when he is aggressive and attacking the basket. When he gets to the basket, he can score around you or through you. He is shooting 35% from three albeit on limited volume but does have solid mechanics on his jump shot. He is another player who can play at the next level.
Jordan Alston | 6-0 | G | 2024 | Granville Central High School
Alston has seen his points per game average rise each year that he has been on varsity. Offensively,he is at his best when he is attacking the basket. When he gets to the basket, you will routinely see him playing under control off two feet. He can also finish with both hands effectively. Defensively, he has great energy. You will see in one defensive possession create a steal and in another possession making a great contest without fouling.
Bakari Jordan Watkins Bakari Jordan Watkins 6'5" | PF Carrboro | 2026 State NC | 6-5 | F | 2026 | Carrboro High School
Watkins has seen his scoring and rebounding more than double in his second year of Varsity. Only a sophomore, he seems to be developing a well-rounded game. He is an offensive rebounding machine. Not only that, but once he gets the rebound he almost always scores. He is a player that understands his role. He blocks shots, he rebounds and he runs the floor well for his size. He will be one to continue to follow. Watkins is a player that should be on the radar now.
Jameir Strickland | 6-2 | G | 2024 | Bunn High School
Jameir is a player that plays bigger than his 6-2 frame. He has good athleticism and length. He uses that length to attack the basket. When he attacks the basket, he is the type of player that can score using both hands. He also scores well in traffic. He is also an unselfish player who wants to make the right play for his team. Defensively, he uses his length to create steals and deflections for his team. He also can block shots for his team.
