The top shooters were chosen for the three-point shootout. Let’s dive into what we learned about next year freshman group
JT Toriola
JT Toriola
JT is a nice size guard with a mature game. He didn’t settle for many threes as he consistently found ways to get to the rim and initiating contact. At times Toriola was a defensive present for his team and rebounded well from the guard position. Plays with a fire inside him and I can’t wait to see more from him.
Ashton Eakins
Ashton Eakins
Eakins caught my eye during drills with his length and ball handling skills. He defended multiply positions and blocked many shots and layups. Offensively Ashton can play multiply position but looked comfortable and little unfair on the wing. He talked to teammates on and off the court being one of the few vocal leaders.
Jakolby White
Jakolby White
Kolby clearly had the most energy out of all the participants. He competed at a high level during ever drill and was very attentive when instructors were giving advice. White was a pest on defense with quick feet and active hands putting pressure on the ball.
“The little guy finished some tough shots over much longer defenders and made it hard not to notice his production.” – Bobby Benjamin
Kennny Taylor Jr.
Kennny Taylor Jr.
Taylor day started a little slow but quickly picked up to illegal speed limits. Shooting 80% the first round of the three-point contest, was just the start of him winning every round and being crowned the King. Like most good shooters Kenny, holds his follow through on the release and shoot every shot the same way.
“During the game his skills were more polish, using fancy dribbles to avoid defenders and making shots form all levels. Kenny is a basketball player that can shoot the ball extremely well. ” – Bobby Benjamin
Kai Aitch
Kai Aitch
Pitch is another kid who played with high positive energy. He grabbed rebounds, blocked shots and hustled for any loose balls near him. Kai had his offensive moments showing good post moves and playing through the contact drawing fouls.
Ja’Varius Greenwood
Ja’Varius Greenwood
Greenwood left with people making sure they knew who he was. Another prospect with good length heading into high school. Have a decent handle on the ball and a soft touch around the rim. Knows how to take advantage of his size down low when rebounding and getting easy putbacks and to get his shot off over smaller defenders.
“Also good at leading the break after a rebound and running the lane to get in transition. Ja’Varius had a good afternoon and a lot of potential.” – Bobby Benjamin
William Owens
William Owens
Owens showed great awareness and IQ on both ends of the court helping his team to a good win. William had impressive vision finding the open cutter and was patience enough offensively to get valuable offensive possessions.
“In competitions, Owens dominated most defenders and was scoring from all three levels. He was good at anticipating what the offense was doing and he stayed in the right spot to make defensive plays.” – Bobby Benjamin
Jeremy Jackson
Jeremy Jackson
Jeremy had one of the best offensive performances of the day. The crafty guard was breaking ankles and making tough shots during most of the early competitions. I learned how solid of an on-ball defender Jackson can become putting pressure on the ball
“Jackson definitely cooled down or ran out of bullets during the three-point contest but was able to find his swag again for the all-star game. During the game he got teammates involved, played solid defense and got a few buckets as expected.” – Bobby Benjamin
Landen Harris
Landen Harris
Harris showed his competitive side through the entire camp. Solid body frame of a football player at his age. Caused turnovers in the backcourt during the all-star game leading his team to double-digit victory playing aggressive. Created frequent paint touches for his team, and attacks the rim fearless.
“Harris was getting effective during the individual competitions even making a kid or two touch the floor. He has a quick first step and know how to change paces when attacking defenders. He shot the ball well advancing to the second round of the three-point contest and he was one of the best defenders at the showcase.” – Bobby Benjamin
