Nonetheless all must be great defenders and get the job done being floor general number one. Here are the top six point guards ranked by Prep Hoops as categorized by their profiles.
It will come to nobody’s surprise that Young is top ranked here. The recent Akron commit has dazzled crowds and college coaches for three years now and will continue to do so this school season. Sharron has every attribute that anyone would want in a point guard. The most valuable but more obscure thing he does on the floor is control tempo and having a feel for where the tempo needs to be. He’s a perfect example for young players learning the game at this position as he rarely makes a mistake.
Highlights
Elijah Redfern Elijah Redfern 6'3" | PG Woodrow Wilson | 2024 State WV
Elijah Redfern Elijah Redfern 6'3" | PG Woodrow Wilson | 2024 State WV
Redfern, who is an outstanding two sport athlete, has picked up a D2 offer from Glenville recently for basketball. Elijah has incredible athletic ability and lateral quickness and ability to be an elite defender, both attributes of being a D2 player. Redfern has been depended upon to be a shot maker in school season’s past but might have enough weapons around him to be more a distributor while still being opportunistic in his scoring which is certainly a strong suit.
Jaiden Gladney Jaiden Gladney 5'11" | PG Jefferson | 2024 State WV
Jaiden Gladney Jaiden Gladney 5'11" | PG Jefferson | 2024 State WV
Gladney is a spectacular guard who despite playing in WV’s top division and arguably the division’s top shooter, has seen the college attention come at a slow pace. WV BlueChips rates him as a D2 level guard and has referred him to several D2 and D3 schools. Gladney shoots a high volume as well as a high volume from three, but has great point guard skills to pair with it. He’s gonna be a steal for whatever program lands him.
Jayden Clark Jayden Clark 5'10" | PG Huntington | 2024 State WV
Jayden Clark Jayden Clark 5'10" | PG Huntington | 2024 State WV
Jayden Clark Jayden Clark 5’10” | PG Huntington | 2024 State WV is coming off a spectacular junior campaign as well as an impressive spring and summer in AAU basketball. Clark is certainly a next level player with a skill set that will translate nicely to a college roster. The St Albans product lit up the scorebooks last season and likely to continue this season, however he’s had some weapons start to emerge in St Albans that might allow him to showcase his decision making and command of the floor. And exciting year in the works for Clark.
Dawson Lunsford Dawson Lunsford 6'3" | PG George Washington | 2024 State WV
Dawson Lunsford Dawson Lunsford 6'3" | PG George Washington | 2024 State WV
Dawson Lunsford Dawson Lunsford 6’3″ | PG George Washington | 2024 State WV has one of the most sought after yet anticipated jobs in high school basketball. The job of being floor general for arguably the state’s most talented and gifted roster. Expectations will be high and only one goal of cutting down the Civic Center nets in March. But Lunsford is no stranger to big situations with great talent in the same uniform. We’d expect him to have great command of the floor and use his sharp decision making to make the right plays as he typically does in every situation. Lunsford has a great skill of either finding the right player or making the right play himself, whether it be a dish, jumper or drive.
Wayne Harris Wayne Harris 5’9″ | PG Huntington | 2024 WV is one of, if not the top, multi-sport athlete in WV. Already a Kent St football commit, Harris continues to exceed expectations on any sports venue. Harris on the basketball court is what you would imagine from a 5’10” 3-star WR, quick, explosive and exceptionally athletic. Plays the point as fierce as one can on both ends and brings the energy for his team every night out. Another WV gem that continues to show how dynamic our in-state athletes are.
Maier is a tough bulldog type player outta Grafton WV. While lacking the necessary exposure playing at a small WV high school, Maier has taken his show on the road with Coach Nuzum and the Big Shots WV Reign to display his quick feet, athleticism and toughness while playing the floor general position. Coaches can get a look at him during this upcoming school season where he’ll compete in one of WV’s toughest regions.
Gute is a player you really need to see in person to fully appreciate. Our first time seeing him in person was nothing short of entertaining yet seeing him be efficient and effective. The height might give some coaches pause, but this kid makes up for it in so many ways. A dynamic player that can score when necessary, yet balance the floor and facilitate, we are confident Gute will find a college program that understands his full value.
Kam’ron Gore Kam’ron Gore 6'1" | PG Bluefield | 2024 State WV

Gore is a player who we think will get much attention throughout this upcoming season. Already a first team all stater as a junior, Gore has full command of the floor and every weapon needed to be a nightmare for defenses. Being able to see him in person multiple times this season has given us a great sample size to help solidify his stock amongst the other WV elite. We could definitely see multiple offers by seasons end.
Bailes is certainly a true point guard. No real holes in his game and he plays hard and with a real passion. A great floor leader in every arena, whether it be school ball or AAU, Bailes is always willing to lead and leave it all on the floor. Great on court IQ and work ethic are a combination that will make a program happy, and we think he’ll get his opportunity somewhere. Senior season will be a big one and possibly one that entails college offers and visits.
