When it comes to the very top of the rankings, there are a couple of new names including a “newcomer” to the top five. Here’s how things shook out.
The “newcomer” to the list is Hill, who has that listed in quotes because Oregon high school fans are well familiar with the Roosevelt senior as he played his first two years in high school as a Roughrider. He returns home to North Portland after spending his junior season at AZ Compass Prep, which helped him further develop his game and earn him a number a scholarship offers – including the one he committed to sign with this fall, Utah State. Hill left the state as the #1 ranked player in the class and after chatting with a number of national pundits that watched him perform down in Arizona, we decided it was fair for him to reclaim that spot in this update of the rankings. He’s a legit challenger for 6A Player of the Year honors.
The former #1 ranked player in the state, Maurer still checks in at #2 and rightfully so. The 7-foot senior is coming off back-to-back 3A state championships with Cascade Christian and a three-peat could cement his legacy as one of the all-time small school greats in the history of Oregon high school basketball. Playing with the Team Why Not this past summer, he got stronger and tougher as an inside presence on both ends while maintaining his shooting stroke from distance. Still undecided on his college destination, Maurer is still aiming at signing this fall.
Carmichael comes in with this update right at #3 and that’s no slight at all to the defending 5A State Player of the Year. He’s earned his stripes as one of the most versatile and dominant offensive players in the state at any level and is virtually unguardable with his length, athleticism, and skills. Carmichael had another big spring/summer leading the Players Play AAU program and also helped bolster local squad BOSS Basketball in a couple of tournaments. Despite still getting asked if he’s open by other schools, Carmichael has stayed true with his commitment to sign with Boise State as he tries to lead Summit to that elusive state title this year.
To be honest, any of the top four guys in the state have a case to be ranked number one and Steppe coming at #4 is the perfect example. The versatile Tualatin talent was one of the most highly recruited guys in the senior class and after taking a number of visits this fall, he recently decided to commit to Colorado State. This spring and summer, Steppe was one of the mainstays inside for the NW Rotary Rebels on the EYBL circuit but his skill set and ability to score from anywhere on the court remains one of the most diverse in the state. He’s another contender for 6A POY honors as he tries to help lead the Timberwolves to a three-peat.
The other new addition to the top five in this update of rankings is Zeller, who was one of the biggest stock risers in the entire Class of 2024 this off-season. The athletic swingman got things going in the spring playing with More Than Hoops and then in June back with Central Catholic, really blew up in at the WIBCA and Section 7 scholastic events. His Division I offer list grew to where you needed two hands to count them up and after making all his visits, recently decided he would take his talents to Pepperdine. His ascent is part of the reason why Central Catholic is considered one of the 6A favorites this season.
