To help our readers get the best knowledge of the landscape of the national basketball scene, we’re answering some hot topic questions that fans want to know. In this article, we’re taking a look at some freshman guards that are sure to make headlines sooner rather than later.
Curry projects as the most athletic 2027 guard in the state as he’s already shown the ability to fly for highlight dunks and chase-down blocks. Already with good size for a primary guard, Curry stands at 6’3 and has the body to continue to fill out physically. With four offers from Texas A&M, Cincinnati, Illinois and Kent State already, there’s high expectations for Curry’s prep career that begins this winter.
The second guard in Lakota West’s talented freshman duo, Tyson came to our Prep Hoops Freshman expo and was one of the top performers from the event. A microwave scorer, few players can light it up from the outside as quickly as Tyson can. It’ll be exciting to watch the growth of Tyson and Curry together as they try and help Lakota West compete in what might be the toughest conference in Ohio.
The 2027 guard I’ve watched the most of thus far, Mirgon was sensational running the show for Midwest Basketball Club 3SSB playing up at the 15 U level. Playing with poise and a feel for the game advanced beyond his years, Mirgon will also be a key piece to a Hilliard Bradley squad that expects to compete for a state title this winter.
The Columbus City League usually has some top talent and Johnson could be the next star from that league. A guard who plays with impressive pace and can set teammates up with his gravity and vision, he’ll be a key piece next to a talented cast of prospects on Walnut Ridge this winter. Johnson was another prospect who attended our Prep Hoops Freshman showcase in the fall and showed why he’s regarded as one of the top 2027 prospects in the state.
